YOUTH CARRIES GYMNASTICS TO THIRD PLACE FINISH AT NORCAL MEET

Sophomore Ashley Wooff led the team on bars during her first routine of the season.

STANFORD, Calif. —
Led by freshman Kalliah McCartney's performance in the all-around, the Sacramento State gymnastics team placed third at the NorCal Quad Meet on Sunday at Stanford.

The Hornets scored a season-high 191.575 in the four-team meet, finishing ahead of UC Davis (190.775). Stanford, which entered the season ranked eighth in the preseason poll, finished first at 194.900. San Jose State was second at 194.300.

McCartney placed third in the all-around with a four-event total of 39.150. The Vancouver, Wash., native led the team with a 9.750 on floor during the first rotation. Her 9.750 on vault placed her fifth overall and was the highest score in the event outside of Stanford. On bars, McCartney scored 9.625 before finishing the meet with a 9.725 on beam to place to tie for third.

As a team, the Hornets shined in their first three rotations before encountering some trouble on beam. Sacramento State scored 47.785 on floor with its top four scores being 9.600 or higher. Sophomores Katie Osaki and Kaila Kilwein scored 9.650 and 9.625 to rank second and third on the team, respectively.

On vault, sophomore Kailey Hansen and senior Emiko Ono helped the team to a 48.275. Hansen totaled a 9.725 while Ono scored 9.700. All five scores for the team were above 9.525.

Ashley Wooff, who was inserted into the lineup on Friday, led Sacramento State on bars with a 9.750 to tie for fourth place overall. Woof's previous career best was a 9.500 in an exhibition performance last season. As a team, the Hornets scored 48.275 on the event as the remaining four scores fell between 9.600 and 9.650.

Sacramento State closed things out on beam with a 47.150. The team had five falls in its six routines and was forced to count two towards the team total. McCartney was followed by Hansen who scored 9.650. Freshman Kayla Wonderly finished third on the team with a 9.550.

Overall, Stanford dominated the individual event winners. Nicole Dayton and Nicole Pechanec tied for first on vault with 9.825s. Pechanac scored 9.900 to win bars and Ashley Morgan won floor with a 9.900.

San Jose State's Thomasina Wallace was the individual champion on beam (9.825) and also captured the all-around (39.150).

NOTES: Due to technical issues, complete compiled results are not available at this time…Sacramento State competed without junior Nicole Meiller due to injury…Meiller was a projected starter on vault and bars…the team's next meet will be at Boise State on Friday night.
