GYMNASTICS TAKES ADVANTAGE OF SEASON HIGH FOR VICTORY AT CAL

2/6/2011

Jasmine Lipka scored season highs on three events to help the Hornets to victory.

BERKELEY, Calif. —
The Sacramento State gymnastics team needed every bit of its season high score to edge Cal, 192.900-192.700, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

The Hornets held the lead through the first three rotations and were able to withstand a furious comeback from the Golden Bears on floor to earn its second win of the season and set a season high by over two points.

Sacramento State began the meet on bars and scored a season-best 48.500. Senior Jasmine Lipka placed second overall with a team-leading 9.775. Lipka was closely followed by Emiko Ono and Amanda Blauvelt who each scored 9.750 to finish in a three-way tie for third. The Hornets also counted a 9.725 from Kaila Kilwein and Bethany Barrick's 9.500.

Sacramento State's lead was trimmed by Cal during the second rotation as the Hornets scored 48.175 on vault while the Bears amassed a 48.675 on bars. Sacramento State was consistent in the event, as all five counting scores ranged between 9.675 and 9.600. Freshman Katie Osaki finished third overall and led the team. Seniors Amanda Bieber and Amanda Blauvelt tied for fourth at 9.650 while Chantal Angyal and Kailey Hansen tied for sixth with 9.600s.

Three scores of at least 9.675 on floor helped Sacramento State extend its advantage during the third rotation. The team was paced by a 9.875 from Lipka which left her in second place at the conclusion of the meet. Kilwein tied for third with a 9.750 and Osaki was seventh at 9.675. Hansen (9.575) and Blauvelt (9.525) provided the final two scores and gave the team a total of 48.400.

Leading by 1.1 points, the Hornets headed to beam where it scored 47.425. At the same time, Cal was producing a season-high score on floor in which all five of its gymnasts set personal bests. On beam, senior Lissa Zamolo tied for first for the second-consecutive week with a 9.775. Hansen was third at 9.725 and Lipka placed fifth with a 9.600. Freshman Elideth Guerrero aided the team total with a 9.550 to place seventh. However, the team was suffered two falls, and was forced to count one, leaving the victory in jeopardy.

On floor, Cal was led by a 9.900 from Mariesah Pierce and a 9.750 from Lina Nilsson but came up just short. The 0.2 point loss was the second for the Golden Bears this season.

Sacramento State returns home for the first time since the opening week of the season when it welcomes Utah State on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The victory over Cal was the third in a row for Sacramento State in the series…sophomore Nicole Meiller and freshman Ashley Wooff did not compete due to injuries.
