GYMNASTICS IMPROVES SCORE IN LOSS TO SOUTHERN UTAH

CEDAR CITY, Utah --- The Sacramento State gymnastics team improved its score from the season-opening meet but it was not enough as the Hornets were topped by Southern Utah, 194.075-191.600, Friday night at The Centrum.

The loss dropped Sacramento State to 2-1 on the season while Southern Utah moved to 1-0.

The Thunderbirds won all four events and were led by Elsie Wheeler who scored 39.000 to win the all-around. Wheeler finished first on vault and bars with a pair of 9.800s, was third on floor with a 9.775 and sixth on beam at 9.625.

The Hornets’ highest finish was a third-place showing by Marina Borisova on vault and by  junior Nicole Giao and freshman Eryn Stubblefied who tied for third on beam. Sophomore Marina Borisova had the highest Sacramento State score of the night with a 9.750 on bars which placed fourth.

Stubblefield, who was competing in her first all-around, led the team with a score of 38.375.

Sacramento State will next compete at Alaska-Anchorage on Friday, Jan. 19, and Sunday, Jan. 21.
