GYMNASTICS KEEPS STREAK ALIVE WITH ANOTHER SEASON HIGH IN WIN OVER SAN JOSE STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team jumped to an early lead after the first rotation and never let up on way to recording a season high score of 194.225 in a victory over San Jose State on Friday night. The Hornets were helped by seven top three finishes in the four events, including a tie for first on beam by Cayla Boyce and Traci Takeda.
The season high continues a streak in which Sacramento State has increased its overall team score each week since the start of the season. The team's previous high in 2010 was 193.850 which came last week at Boise State.
"It's exciting to hit on four events," Sacramento State head coach Kim Hughes said. "It was those little details from everyone that helped us to the score.
"Individually, Jasmine (Lipka) continues to be amazing on her three events. Nicole (Meiller) also had a big day by placing on two events and Emiko stepped up on vault."
The Hornets opened the meet on vault and tallied a season best 48.400. That score placed the team nearly a point above the Spartans who scored 47.725 on bars. Leading the way for Sacramento State was Nicole Meiller who received a 9.750 to place third overall. Not far behind was Ono, Amanda Blauvelt and Eryn Stubblefield, who each scored 9.700. Lissa Zamolo and Takeda each scored 9.550 as all six Hornets hit in the rotation.
SJSU was able to narrow the gap in the second rotation with a 48.500 on vault compared to Sacramento State's 48.250 on bars. Blauvelt and Meiller each tied personal bests in the event and finished second and third, respectively. Blauvelt anchored the Hornet lineup with a 9.800 while Meiller tallied a 9.725. Lauren Dyson's 9.700 tied her for fourth and the team also counted a 9.525 from Lipka and a 9.500 from Takeda.
Sacramento State was able to extend its lead in the third rotation with a season high of 49.000 on beam. That score was not only the best this season, but is tied for fourth in school history on the event. Zamolo opened the rotation with a 9.775 and was followed by a pair of 9.700s from Lipka and Lizzy Norvell. Boyce and Takeda each added a 9.850 while Stubblefield completed the top three sweep with a 9.825 to finish third.
The Hornets closed out the competition with a score of 48.575 on floor. All six gymnasts scored 9.600 or better during the rotation. Lipka tied for third in the meet with a 9.800 and Boyce, Barrick and Stubblefield each scored 9.725. Kaitie Kinser and Zamolo also provided marks of 9.600.
San Jose State's Thomasina Wallace won the all-around with a four-event total of 39.075. Wallace was also first on bars (9.825) and floor (9.850). Fellow Spartan Katie Merritt scored 9.800 to win on vault.
Sacramento State, which has won two of the three meetings this season against SJSU, will travel to San Jose State on Friday, Feb. 26, for a three-way meet which also includes UC Davis.
