GYMNASTICS SCORES SEASON HIGH, SPLITS WITH No. 18 SOUTHERN UTAH AND CAL STATE FULLERTON

1/29/2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team scored a season-high 192.775 and had the best team score on three of the four events but finished second in a three-team meet on Friday night at the Hornets Nest.

The Hornets placed behind 18th-ranked Southern Utah (193.575) and ahead of Cal State Fullerton (188.900) to move to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in WAC meets.

Sacramento State scored season highs on bars, beam and floor but the difference of the meet came on vault. The Hornets recorded a season low of 47.125 during their first rotation while SUU tallied an amazing 48.875. The 1.75 point differential proved to be enough for the Thunderbirds to claim victory.

Individually, Sacramento State was led by junior Lissa Zamolo who finished first on beam with a 9.850. Senior Eryn Stubblefield was second on beam (9.825) and in the all-around (38.900).

The Hornets began the meet on vault but struggled to get high scores, despite not counting a fall. All five of the team's countable scores fell between 9.275 and 9.575. Stubblefield had the high among the group but placed ninth overall.

The team bounced back on bars with a balanced attack which featured five scores of 9.700 or better. Stubblefield, Jasmine Lipka and Nicole Meiller each set personal highs on the event. Stubblefield scored 9.775 to place fourth. Lipka tallied a 9.750 to finish sixth and Meiller scored 9.725 to place seventh.

After two meets with three falls on beam, Sacramento State had its best night of the year (49.550). Zamolo tied her career high to finish first, just edging Stubblefield by .025 points. Sophomore Cayla Boyce was fourth overall with a 9.800 and Lipka was seventh with a career high 9.700.

The Hornets closed out their night on floor with a 48.450 as a team. Kaitie Kinser led off with a career high 9.575 and was followed by a 9.750 from Boyce. Freshman Bethany Barrick also set a personal best with a 9.725. That score was later matched by Stubblefield and Lipka tallied a 9.675. Boyce placed third in the event while Barrick and Stubblefield tied for fourth.

Southern Utah had the individual winner on vault, bars, floor and the all-around. Melissa Johnson scored 9.900 on vault and led the way for four T-Birds who took the top spots. Jenna Vogt and Elise Wheeler tied for first on bars at 9.850. Wheeler also won floor with a 9.800 and the all-around (39.200).

Sacramento State will next compete at Stanford on Feb. 7. The team's next home meet will come against San Jose State on Feb. 19.
