GYMNASTICS BEGINS SEASON WITH WINS OVER CAL AND UC DAVIS

BERKELEY, Calif. — Senior Marina Borisova finished first in the all-around and also won the individual title on bars, beam and floor to help lead Sacramento State to victories over California and UC Davis, Saturday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Hornets scored 191.925 points while the Aggies finished with 190.250 and the Golden Bears tallied 186.650. Sacramento State’s point total was its largest in a season opening meet since scoring 192.275 in 2005.
Borisova scored 39.150 in the all-around to easily win the event. Teammate Eryn Stubblefield was second with 38.625 followed by Cal’s Jessica Kelley at 38.275. Borisova began the meet with a 9.750 on beam and a 9.800 on floor. She then scored 9.750 on vault to place second before winning bars with a 9.850.
"Overall, it was a very good start to the season," Sacramento State head coach Kim Hughes said. "Every event had some problems but they are all correctable. I'm really please with how well we competed tonight.
"Marina looked great on everything," Hughes explained. "She was able to muscle through some of her mistakes without any major deductions. She really showed some maturity."
The Hornets scored at least 47.700 in al four events. The team opened the meet with a 47.700 on beam. Borisova was followed by a 9.550 from Traci Takeda and a 9.525 from Lissa Zamolo. The team also counted a 9.475 from Stubblefield.
Sacramento State upped its score on floor during the second rotation with a 48.500 team total. All six Hornets scored at least 9.625. Borisova’s event win was closely trailed by Zamolo who tied for second with a 9.750. Stubblefield tied for sixth at 9.700, Chantal Angyal tied for eighth at 9.675, and Jasmine Lipka and freshman Cayla Boyce tied for ninth at 9.625.
On vault, three Hornets placed in the top five. Borisova and Stubblefield (9.725) finished second and third, respectively, behind UC Davis’ Tanya Ho (9.775). Angyal was fifth with a 9.625 and Boyce tied for seventh with a 9.575.
The team concluded the meet on bars with three more top five showings. Amanda Blauvelt scored 9.750 to place fourth and Stubblefied tied for fifth with a 9.725. The Hornets also received a 9.575 from Traci Takeda and were forced to count a fall in their five scores.
Sacramento State will next travel to Seattle to take on Washington, Seattle Pacific and Stanford in a four-team meet on Jan. 16. The team’s first home meet will come on Jan. 30 against Illinois State.
