SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team began its 2008 season with a narrow loss to Cal State Fullerton (189.525-189.000), Sunday afternoon at the Hornets Nest despite recording individual victories on vault, bars and beam.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 0-1 on the season while the Titans improved to 1-1.
Sacramento State trailed after the first rotation as the Hornets scored 47.800 on vault and Cal State Fullerton tallied 47.850 on bars. Freshman Alycia Chan led Sacramento State with a 9.700 on her first collegiate vault to win the event. Junior Marina Borisova was third overall with a 9.625.
The Hornets took the lead after the second rotation. The team scored 48.175 on bars as all six gymnasts recorded a score of 9.525 or better. Borisova claimed the individual title with a 9.750 and junior Amber Basgall finished in a three-way tie for second. Basgall had not competed since the 2006 WAC Championships but scored 9.675.
Sacramento State’s lead evaporated during the third rotation as the Titans scored 47.775 on floor and the Hornets managed 47.125 on beam. Alaina Baker anchored the CSF lineup with a 9.725 to win the title on floor. Borisova scored 9.675 on beam to finish first overall but Sacramento State was forced to count two falls. Sophomores Eryn Stubblefield and Lissa Zamolo finished second and third, respectively, with 9.600 and 9.525.
Trailing by .05 points entering the final rotation, the Hornets had five of the six athletes in their lineup fall and scored just 45.900. Cal State Fullerton had its troubles as well on beam but held on for the win with a score of 46.375.
Baker won the all-around with a four-event total of 38.200. She was followed by Borisova (38.050), Eryn Stubblefield (37.850) and Melissa Genovese (37.200).
Sacramento State will next compete on Friday, Jan. 18, at Utah State. The team’s next home meet will be on Friday, Jan. 25, against San Jose State.
