STANFORD, Calif. —The Sacramento State gymnastics team scored 192.050 and finished in fifth place at NCAA West Regional at Maples Pavilion on Saturday night. Top-seeded Alabama and Oregon State earned the two automatic berths to the NCAA National Championships. The Crimson Tide scored 196.475 while the Beavers finished with 195.800. Host and second-seeded Stanford finished third at 195.275 while San Jose State rallied to claim fourth at 192.375. Boise State completed the six-team field at 187.025
The Hornets opened the meet on beam and scored 48.525. Trista Condren led off for the team and scored 9.650. Sophomore Nicole Giao followed with a 9.700 which tied for her best score in the last six meets. Sophomore Tiffany Bass fell during her routine and stumbled on the dismount resulting in a 9.125 before freshman Marina Borisova scored 9.625. Sophomore Melissa Genovese kept her perfect season alive with a 9.750. The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native did not fall on beam during her 13 routines and recorded at least a 9.700 in 11 of those contests. Senior Kimiye Narasaki completed the lineup with a 9.800 which was her second highest of the season.
After a bye, the Hornets turned to floor and scored 47.775. Senior Brooke Morari opened the lineup but fell during her final pass resulting in a 9.025. Senior Sharee Brugess, who was in the lineup due to an injury suffered by Amber Basgall in Friday’s practice, followed with a 9.475 in her first appearance in the lineup since Jan. 22. Senior Carrie Kinghorn stumbled during her first pass and ended her routine with a 9.200. Bass answered with a 9.650 and Condren added a 9.600 which included a one-tenth deduction for stepping out on her final pass. Borisova, who entered the meet ranked 11th in the region on floor, concluded the rotation with a 9.850.
Kinghorn began the Hornet lineup on vault during the fourth rotation. The senior, who replaced the injured Basgall, scored 9.475 and was followed by a 9.625 from Giao. Narasaki and Borisova recorded back-to-back 9.600s and Morari and Condren finished with consecutive 9.700s to give the team a score of 48.225 for the event.
Sacramento State entered the final rotation with just under a half-point lead (144.525-144.050) over San Jose State for fourth place. The Hornets opened with Genovese who scored 9.575. Bass made her collegiate competition debut next. The sophomore had competed just once as an exhibition on the event during the 2004 season before being inserted for Basgall on Friday. She promptly responded with a 9.675. Borisova added a 9.550 but was followed by a fall on the dismount of Kinghorn who scored 8.700. Narasaki kept the team’s fourth-place hopes alive with a 9.650 but sophomore Alexis Tsurumoto fell for just the second time this season and ended with a 9.075.
While the team was on bars, San Jose State moved into fourth place with a 48.325 on vault.
Individually, Stanford’s Tabitah Yim captured two individual event titles as well as the all-around. Yim scored 9.950 to win bars and tied for first on beam with a 9.900. She also claimed the all-around with a total of 39.525. Alabama’s Brittany Magee and Ashley Miles also shared first place on both vault and floor. Borisova finished sixth in the all-around with a 38.625
