GYMNASTICS HANDLES No. 24 UTAH STATE

LOGAN, Utah --- Senior Brooke Morari finished first on vault, sophomore Melissa Genovese won beam and freshman Marina Borisova was the top gymnast on floor to lead Sacramento State to a 193.750-192.175 victory over 24th-ranked Utah State on Friday night.

The win improved Sacramento State to 8-8 overall and kept the team unbeaten against Western Athletic Conference foes in four meets. Utah State fell to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in WAC meets.

The Hornets began the night on bars where they were led by sophomore Alexis Tsurumoto who scored 9.725 to finish fourth. While no Sacramento State gymnast cracked the top three, the team was consistent, claiming six of the next seven spots. Senior Kimiye Narasaki scored 9.700 to tie for fifth, sophomore Amber Basgall scored 9.675 to finish seventh and senior Carrie Kinghorn and sophomore Nicole Giao tied for eighth at 9.575.

Utah State opened on vault and tallied a 48.600 to take a .350 lead after one rotation. The Aggies were led by Jessica Parenti who scored 9.800 to tie for second.

The team’s switched events for the second rotation and the Hornets responded by scoring 48.825 on vault, which ties the sixth best score in school history in the event. Morari scored 9.825 to win the competition and was closely trailed by a 9.800 from Basgall who tied for second. Borisova was fifth at 9.750 and Giao and Narasaki each scored 9.725 to tie for sixth.

On bars, Utah State saw its lead disappear with a 47.375. The Aggies recorded the top three individual scores in the meet as Parenti tallied a 9.850, Alex Martin scored 9.800 and Meagan Lewis received a 9.775. However, the team was forced to count an 8.250.

In the third rotation, Borisova paced the Hornets on floor with a 9.825. Senior Trista Condren tied for fourth at 9.775 and sophomore Courtney Hibler tallied a 9.650 to finish sixth. Senior Carrie Kinghorn finished eighth at 9.600 and team also counted a 9.275 from sophomore Tiffany Bass to end with a score of 48.125.

The Aggies had any hopes of a comeback end on beam during the third rotation. The team scored 47.675 but had two counting scores below 9.200. Parenti finished second in the meet with a 9.850 and Lewis had a 9.825 to place fourth.

In the final rotation, Sacramento State scored 48.550 on beam to match the 10th highest mark in school history. Genovese led the way with a career high 9.900. That score is tied for the second best in school history and she becomes just the fourth gymnast to score a 9.900 or better on beam at Sacramento State. Giao tied for second with a career high 9.850 and Borisova was fifth overall at 9.800.

On floor, the Aggies were guided by Martin and Lewis who tied for second with a pair of 9.800s.

In the all-around, Parenti scored 39.275 to finish one-tenth ahead of Lewis.

Sacramento State returns to competition on March 3 against Boise State. The team’s next home meet will come on March 12 against UC Davis at 2 p.m.
