GYMNASTICS PLACES SIXTH IN FIRST MEET

1/3/2006

KAILUA, Hawaii — Senior Trista Condren tied for seventh on floor and sophomore Alexis Tsurumoto tied for seventh on bars to lead the Sacramento State gymnastics team in its first meet of the season, Tuesday night at Kailua High School.

As a team, the Hornets finished sixth in the meet which was won by third-ranked UCLA. The Bruins scored 193.775 followed by No. 13 Oregon State (191.925), No. 20 Arkansas (190.625), No. 18 Washington (190.425), California (189.350) and Sacramento State (188.075).

Condren and Tsurumoto were the only two Hornets to finish in the top 10 in any of the four events. Condren scored 9.625 on the floor while Tsurumoto recorded a 9.725 on bars.

Sacramento State was plagued by inconsistency throughout the meet. The team began the competition on vault with a strong start from Tiffany Bass (9.600), Carrie Kinghorn (9.500) and Nicole Giao (9.575). However, Kimiye Narasaki, who was vaulting for the first time since 2003, scored 9.000 and Brooke Morari followed with an 8.925 before Amber Basgall closed out the lineup with a 9.475.

On bars, the team was forced to count a pair of scores below 9.275. Tsurumoto was the highlight while Narasaki added a 9.625 and Melissa Genovese tallied a 9.475.

The team was more consistent on beam, but lacked the big score. Bass scored 9.525 for the team high while Condren was close behind at 9.475. The other countable scores came from Narasaki (9.450), Genovese (9.350) and Courtney Hibler (9.325).

The biggest surprise came on floor where Sacramento State managed to score just 46.500 as a team. Condren was the lone Hornet to score above 9.500 as she recorded a 9.625. Hibler and Kinghorn tied for second on the squad with 9.450. The team also counted a 9.125 from senior Sharee Burgess and an 8.850 from Narasaki.

UCLA’s Kate Richardson won the all-around title with a combined score of 38.750. Richardson, who competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics for Canada, tied for the individual title on vault with a 9.850 and also captured the floor crown with a 9.800.

Washington’s Ashley Houghting matched Richardson on vault at 9.850. Kelly McDonald of Washington was the bars champion with a 9.850 and Claire Pierce of Oregon State scored 9.725 to win on beam.

Sacramento State returns to competition on Friday, Jan. 13, against Cal. The meet will take place at the Hornets Nest and will begin at 7 p.m.
