SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior Stefanie Aeder finished first on both the balance beam and floor exercise to lead Sacramento State to a season-high score in a 194.525-191.200 victory over UC Davis, Sunday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.The victory improved the Hornets to 9-8 while the Aggies dropped to 7-12. The victory was the third over UC Davis this season and the 10th in a row dating back to March 15, 2002.
As a team, the Hornets destroyed their previous season-best of 193.200 which came against San Jose State on Feb. 4. The mark also ranks as the seventh-best in school history and is the top score recorded by a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team this season.
On Sunday, Sacramento State was aided by season-best scores on bars and floor. The team opened the meet with 48.125 on vault and then added a 49.075 on bars. The Hornets did not count a score on bars less than 9.725, including a 9.875 from Jessica Hoffman and a 9.850 from Meloney Greer. Hoffman finished first on the event while Greer tied for second with Bradni Forte of UC Davis. The team’s total easily surpassed the season high of 48.675 and is tied for the fifth-highest in the school record book.
Sacramento State kept its momentum rolling on beam. Trista Condren began the rotation with a 9.775 and Nirvana Zaher added a 9.725. Aeder then followed with a career-high 9.850 to win the individual title and freshman Melissa Genovese completed the lineup with a 9.825 to finish second. The trio of Aeder, Genovese and Condren finished 1-2-3 in the individual standings.
Despite the Hornets’ successes in the first three rotations, Sacramento State only led by 0.6 points. However, the Hornets pulled away in the final rotation with a season-high 49.075 on floor while the Aggies struggled on beam with a 46.350. Sharee Burgess opened the Hornet lineup with a career-high 9.825 to tie for third in the event. Carrie Kinghorn followed with a 9.700 before Kimiye Narasaki recorded a 9.825. Hoffman kept things moving with a 9.700 before Nirvana Zaher tallied a 9.825. Aeder capped the evening with a 9.900 to finish first.
In the all-around, Zaher scored a personal season-high 38.975 to win the crown.
UC Davis was paced by Tiffany Chan and Michelle Kulovitz who tied for first on vault at 9.750. Chan was also second on floor with a 9.875.
Sacramento State will close out the home portion of its schedule on Friday, March 18, against Cal State Fullerton. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. The Hornets and Aggies will next square off at the MPSF Championships on March 25 at The Pavilion on the UC Davis campus.
