HOFFMAN LEADS GYMNASTICS OVER UC DAVIS

2/12/2005

DAVIS, Calif. --- Senior Jessica Hoffman scored a career-high 39.075 in the all-around and 9.850 on the floor to lead Sacramento State to a 192-.925-191.775 victory over UC Davis, Friday evening at the Pavilion.

Hoffman was one of four Hornets to win individual titles as Sacramento State took first place on all four events as well as the all-around. In fact, the Hornets swept the top three spots in three events while claiming first and tying for second place in the fourth.

Sacramento State began the evening on bars where the team scored a season-high 48.675. Freshman Alexis Tsurumoto won her fifth title in seven meets this season with a 9.850. That mark just edged teammate Meloney Greer who was second with 9.825. Hoffman rounded out the sweep with a 9.750.

The second rotation saw the Hornets extend their advantage after scoring 48.175 on vault. Senior Nirvana Zaher, freshman Nicole Giao and Hoffman swept the top three spots. Zaher scored 9.750 while Giao and Hoffman tied for second place with 9.700.

Sacramento State continued to build momentum on the floor during its third rotation with Hoffman, senior Stefanie Aeder and Zaher taking the top three spots. Hoffman’s score of 9.850 bettered her previous career mark of 9.825 set earlier this season against Seattle Pacific. Aeder and Zaher tied for second with 9.775.

The Hornets’ hopes of scoring 194-plus in the meet came to a quick close on beam as the team had three of its six gymnasts fall. Despite the troubles, Sacramento State was still able to claim first and third place in the event. Freshman Melissa Genovese scored 9.825 to win the title while Hoffman tied with UC Davis’ Julia Richards (9.775) for second place.

Hoffman was the lone all-arounder in the meet but shattered her career high with the 39.075. Hoffman’s previous best of 38.600 came twice during the 2003 season. The senior’s score was also easily a team-high this year, passing Zaher’s 38.275.

The team’s overall score was its second-best of the season, trailing only the 193.200 set last week against San Jose State. The mark also improves the team’s Regional Qualifying Score to 191.825. The top six RQS in the region will earn a berth into the NCAA West Regional on April 9.
