SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Three Sacramento State gymnasts won event titles to help lead the Hornets to a 193.200-191.100 victory over San Jose State, Friday evening at Hornet Gym. The score was a season-high for Sacramento State, eclipsing its 192.275 set in the season-opener at Cal State Fullerton. The victory also improved the Hornets to 4-6 on the season while the Spartans (3-1) suffered their first loss.Sacramento State led after all four rotations, beginning with a 47.775 on vault. The Hornets were led by freshman Nicole Giao who scored 9.700 and senior Nirvana Zaher who added a 9.650. During the first rotation, San Jose State scored 47.125 on bars. The Spartans were forced to count a fall and were paced by a 9.625 from Kelsey Spellacy.
In the second rotation, Sacramento State extended its lead with a season-high score on bars. The Hornets amassed a total of 48.475 while SJSU recorded a 47.975 on vault. Sacramento State counted five scores above a 9.525 on bars and swept the top three spots. Freshman Alexis Tsurumoto won her fourth bars title in six meets this season by tying her career high with a 9.850. Senior Meloney Greer was second with a 9.775 and senior Jessica Hoffman finished third at 9.750.
The Spartans also showed well during the rotation. Michelle Minotti won the vault title with a 9.750 and Greta Leach was third at 9.675.
Sacramento State continued its momentum on beam, with a season-best 48.475. Freshman Melissa Genovese recorded the best score on the team this season with a 9.875 to claim the title. Junior Kimiye Narasaki placed third with a 9.775. On floor, the Spartans tallied a 48.000, led by a 9.725 from Minotti which tied for second place.
The Hornets closed out the competition with five scores of at least 9.600 en route to a 48.475. Senior Stefanie Aeder won for the fourth time this season with a 9.775. Zaher tied for second with a 9.725. The Spartans equalled their score on floor with a 48.000 on beam. Leach finished second in the event with a 9.825.
In the all-around, San Jose State swept the top three spots. Leach totalled 38.750 to win while Greene (37.625) and Minotti (37.325) were second and third, respectively.
Sacramento State will next compete at UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 11. The team’s next home meet in on Friday, Feb. 25, against Alaska Anchorage and UC Davis.
NOTES: The win avenged a loss to San Jose State last week at Spartan Gym…in that meet, Sacramento State had four total falls on both beam and floor…the Hornets did not count a fall on any event tonight…Giao scored a career-best 9.625 on beam and 9.675 on floor.
