GYMNASTICS FIGHTS TO VICTORY OVER SEATTLE PACIFIC

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Four Sacramento State gymnasts claimed individual titles to lead the Hornets to a 191.600-189.500 over Seattle Pacific, Friday evening at the Hornets Nest. Sacramento State was led by Jessica Hoffman on vault, Alexis Tsurumoto on bars, Kimiye Narasaki on beam and Stefanie Aeder on floor. The all-around title went to Debra Huss of Seattle Pacific.

The Falcons took the lead after the first rotation with a strong performance on bars. SPU scored 48.150 and counted five scores above 9.550. Conversely, the Hornets had their troubles on vault, amassing a total of 47.975 (one full point lower than their total from last week). Hoffman, freshman Nicole Giao and senior Nirvana Zaher anchored the Hornet lineup. Hoffman totalled a 9.725, while Giao and Zaher each scored 9.625.

Sacramento State took the lead for good after the second rotation. The Hornets earned strong scores at the top of their bars lineup and concluded with a 9.850 from Tsurumoto to score 48.375 as a team. The victory on bars was the second in as many meets this season for the freshman. Sophomore Sara Williams and junior Carrie Kinghorn tied for third with 9.725. The meet marked the first time that Williams had competed for the team on bars.

Seattle Pacific narrowed the gap in the third rotation, scoring a 47.850 on floor while Sacramento State totalled a 47.575 on beam. The Falcons were led by Huss who scored 9.850 to finish second in the event overall. The Hornets opened beam with a 9.625 from Hava McCarter-Ribakoff but were forced to count a fall in their team total. Narasaki won the individual title with a 9.775 and freshman Melissa Genovese was second at 9.675.

Sacramento State sealed the meet on floor, despite being forced to count a pair of falls. In all, three of the six Hornet gymnasts fell during their routine and the team scored 47.675. Sacramento State was saved by Aeder and Hoffman in the event. Aeder recorded 9.900 to win the event while Hoffman was third with a 9.825. Aeder has now scored 9.925 and 9.900 in her two meets this season and has six career scores of at least 9.000.

Huss, an native of Orangevale, Calif., scored 38.250 to win the all-around. Kinghorn was second and Hoffman was third for the Hornets. Kinghorn’s total of 37.750 is a career high.

The Hornets return to the gym on Sunday, Jan. 16, against Brown. The meet against the Bears will begin at 2 p.m. in the Hornets Nest.
