FULLERTON, Calif. — Redshirt freshman Alexis Tsurumoto scored 9.850 to win bars in her first collegiate meet, Friday night at Cal State Fullerton. The four-team meet was won by 12th-ranked Oregon State who scored 195.200. Washington, who was 21st in the preseason poll, was second with 194.625 while host Cal State Fullerton (193.225) and Sacramento State (192.275) rounded out the field. The Hornets’ score was the second-highest in a season-opening meet in school history.Tsurumoto, who sat out all of last season with a knee injury, anchored the Sacramento State bars lineup and responded with a stellar performance. The Concord, Calif., native features a twisting double flyaway release, the first ever performed by a Hornet. Tsurumoto’s performance overshadowed a strong effort from senior Meloney Greer who tied for third on bars with a 9.800.
Sacramento State also had a top-three finisher on beam. Senior Stefanie Aeder tied for second with a career-best 9.800. Aeder had not competed on beam since the 2002 season and had not recorded a score higher than 9.250.
Oregon State was led by back-to-back scores of better than 49.000 on floor exercise and vault in the second and third rotations. OSU took three of the top four places on vault, led by Angela Morales'' 9.90. Megan Devencenzi and Heather Justus each scored 9.875 to finish in a three-way tie for second with Sacramento State''s Jessica Hoffman. Hoffman’s mark was her career best and is tied as the ninth best in the school record book.
The Beavers continued to roll on floor as Justus and Morales each scored 9.95. Those marks, however, were only good enough for second place as Washington’s Carly Dockendorf scored 10.0 to win the event.
Dockendorf finished with a 39.300 to win the all-around title by 0.3 over Cal State Fullerton sophomore Erica Ficarrotta. Dockendorf supplemented her floor title by finishing first on beam with a 9.825.
Sacramento State returns to action for its first home meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 14, against Seattle Pacific.
