GYMNASTICS FINISHES SECOND AT MPSF CHAMPIONSHIPS

3/21/2004

SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Senior Binta Coleman won the all-around and Nirvana Zaher was the individual champion on the vault to help lead Sacramento State to a second-place finish at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships Saturday night at Spartan Gym.

Host San Jose State won the meet with a team score of 195.925. The Hornets were .525 behind in second place while UC Davis, Alaska Anchorage, Seattle Pacific and Air Force completed the six-team field. Sacramento State had won the two previous MPSF titles.

The Hornets’ team score was the second-best in school history, trailing only the 195.875 set two weeks ago at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational at Oregon State. The team also tied the second-best mark on bars (49.150) and floor (49.350). The bars score was the highest by a Hornet team since 1999 while the floor score marked the second-straight meet the Sacramento State has scored 49.350 or better. The team’s total of 48.750 on vault is tied for the sixth-best in the program’s record book.

Coleman, who won the Western Independent all-around title as a freshman, scored 39.350 to break the school record of 39.325 set by Toni Petersen at the 2002 MPSF Championships. The Elk Grove, Calif., native scored 9.775 on vault to tie for sixth, 9.900 on bars to tie for third, 9.800 on beam to tie for third and 9.875 on floor to tie for 10th in the event. The score marked the second time this season and the fifth time in her career that Coleman has scored higher than 39.000. Along with her all-around record, Coleman’s bar total is tied for sixth in school history.

Zaher defended her MSPF vault crown with a 9.875 to tie for ninth-best at Sacramento State. The native of Cairo, Egypt, has now won an individual title in each of her three seasons with the team (beam 2002, vault 2003). Zaher also matched her career-high with a 9.900 on floor to tie for eighth in the meet.

The Hornets also received strong showings from junior Meloney Greer who tied Coleman on bars with a 9.900 to tie for sixth in history. One week after setting the school record on floor, junior Stefanie Aeder scored 9.925 to tie for second in school history and fourth at the meet.

San Jose State’s Shirla Choy, who was named MPSF Gymnast of the Year, won the bars with a score of 9.950. The Spartans also won the other two individual titles with Amberly Klein scoring 9.850 on beam and Jennifer Greene winning floor with a perfect 10.000.

If Sacramento State does not qualify as a team for the NCAA West Regionals on April 3, the team will be represented by numerous individual athletes. Coleman, Greer, Aeder, Zaher, junior Jessica Hoffman and freshman Tiffany Bass are all in the running to qualify for the postseason. The top three all-arounders and highest scoring individual on each event from non-competing teams will earn a berth in the competition.
