SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Sacramento State senior Binta Coleman claimed a share of first place on vault, beam and floor but it was not enough as San Jose State downed the Hornets, 193.475-193.125 Friday night at the Hornets Nest. The loss snapped a streak of 10-straight home wins by Sacramento State dating back to last season and was the team’s first against a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent this season in nine tries.Coleman scored 9.750 on vault to win the event outright. She then tied for first place on both bars (9.775) and floor (9.850). Her floor title was shared with teammate Stefanie Aeder. Shirla Choy tied Coleman for top honors on bars while Amberly Klein of SJSU scored 9.800 to win beam.
The Spartans had an early lead after the first rotation, scoring 48.375 on bars compared to the Hornets’ mark of 48.350 on floor. Sacramento State took its first advantage following the second rotation with a 48.550 on bars. The team’s lead, however, was short-lived as the Hornets counted a pair of falls on beam en route to scoring 47.400. San Jose State also had its troubles during the rotation with a fall on floor. Sacramento State’s attempted a comeback on the final rotation, scoring 48.825 on floor. However, the Spartans did not count a fall on beam and scored 48.700 to win the meet.
Choy finished first in the all-around with a total of 38.950. Coleman was second at 38.625 while junior Nirvana Zaher took third at 38.325.
Sacramento State also received top-three finishes from junior Jessica Hoffman and Zaher who tied for third on vault (9.675), junior Meloney Greer and Hoffman on bars (tied for third, 9.750) and sophomore Trista Condren on beam (tied for third, 9.725).
The Hornets will next be in action on Friday, March 5, at Oregon State. The six-team meet also features Michigan State, Boise State, BYU and Seattle Pacific. The team’s final home meet of the season will come on March 12 against Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis.
