GYMNATICS TAKES THIRD IN FIRST MEET OF THE SEASON

STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 6 Stanford opened the season in impressive fashion, winning the four-team Stanford Quadrangular Friday night at Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal recorded a team score of 196.200 to finish ahead of Central Michigan (194.475), Sacramento State (191.425) and San Jose State (191.075). The Hornets’ point total was the second-best season-opening mark in school history, trailing only the 193.575 performance against Cal State Fullerton in 2001.

Sacramento State was guided by senior Binta Coleman. The Elk Grove, Calif., native placed fourth in the all-around with a score of 38.975. Coleman also tied for second on the vault with a score of 9.850 and tied for fifth on bars with 9.800. Her vault score eclipsed her previous career high of 9.825 while her all-around total is the eighth-best in school history.

As a team, the Hornets finished second on the vault behind Stanford. Sacramento State scored 48.550 — tying the seventh-highest score in the program’s record book. Aside from Coleman, the Hornets counted scores from juniors Jessica Hoffman (9.775) and Nirvana Zaher (9..675) and sophomores Rachel Anderson (9.675) and Trista Condren (9.575). The team also finished third on bars (48.200) and floor (48.200) and fourth on beam (46.475).

Sacramento State next travels to Seattle, Wash., to face Washington and Cal on Friday, Jan. 16. The meet will start at 7 p.m.
