GYMNASTICS SCORES SEASON HIGH IN WIN OVER SEAWOLVES

2/16/2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore Marina Borisova finished first on bars, beam, and floor as well as the all-around to help lead Sacramento State to a season high score against Alaska Anchorage on Friday night at the Hornets Nest. The Hornets (7-2) scored 193.050 en route to their 27th consecutive win over the Seawolves (0-7, 186.750).

Borisova’s only blemish on the evening came in the first rotation where her hand touched down resulting in a score of 9.125 on vault. From that point, she scored a career high 9.900 on bars, tied her career best with a 9.825 on beam and ended with a 9.875 on floor. Her all-around total of 38.725 edged teammate Melissa Genovese who was second at 38.400.

The Hornets opened the night on vault and scored 48.000. Freshman Lissa Zamolo led off and scored 9.550. She was followed by Genovese who recorded a 9.626 and junior Nicole Giao, who was third overall at 9.675. Freshman Amanda Bieber added a 9.425 and junior Sara Williams tied for the top spot with a 9.750.

Sacramento State extended its lead after the second rotation to 96.475-93.250 by taking the top six spots on bars. The Hornets scored 48.475 on the event and were led by Borisova who set a career high with a 9.900. Freshman Lauren Dyson was second overall with a 9.725 and Genovese took third at 9.675. Williams (9.600), junior Alyssa Onaga (9.575) and freshman Eryn Stubblefield (9.550) completed the top six sweep by finishing fourth through sixth, respectively.

On beam, the Hornets were steady early on, receiving 9.750s from Zamolo, Stubblefield and Giao. Borisova boosted the score with a 9.825 and put Sacramento State in reach of its season high on the event. However, Genovese fell during her routine ending a streak which dated back to her freshman season in 2005. Despite the fall, Genovese still scored 9.325 helping the team to a 48.400.

Sacramento State was consistent on floor on way to a team total of 48.175. That mark gave the team its first meet with 48.000-plus on all four events this season. After Zamolo (9.325), Bieber (9.400), and Onaga (career high 9.450) opened the lineup, Stubblefield followed with a 9.675. Genovese responded with a 9.775 before Borisova capped off the night.

Alaska Anchorage was led sophomore Lauren Agostio who tied for first on vault with a score of 9.725. The team also received top five finishes from Rachel Lehmkuhl on vault (fifth, 9.575), Courtney Williams on beam (fifth, 9.575), and Tiffany Staton on floor (fourth, 9.575).

The Hornets will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 23, when they travel to San Jose State. The meet against the Spartans is set to begin at 7 p.m.
