GYMNASTICS PRODUCES SECOND BEST BEAM SCORE IN SCHOOL HISTORY EN ROUTE TO SEASON HIGH

LOGAN, Utah —Cayla Boyce scored a career high 9.900 on beam to lead Sacramento State to its second best team beam score in school history and its highest total score of the season on Friday against Utah State. The Hornets stretched their winning streak to 10 over the Aggies with a 194.650-192.050 victory at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The Hornets cemented the victory during the final rotation with an amazing beam scored of 49.275. That mark is the best by a Sacramento State team since a 49.325 was recorded at the 2007 WAC Championships. On Friday, the final five Hornets scored at least 9.825 and each set or tied their season high. Jasmine Lipka began the order with a career high 9.825 which was followed by the same score from Lizzy Norvell. Boyce then received a 9.90 from both judges for her career mark and senior Traci Takeda followed with a 9.875. Eryn Stubblefield anchored the lineup with a 9.850. The team's previous best score on beam this season was 49.000 at home against San Jose State on Feb. 19.
Sacramento State led following each of the four rotations. The Hornets opened the meet on bars and scored 48.425 compared to Utah State's 48.175 on vault. The Aggies narrowed the gap during the second rotation with a 48.550 on bars while Sacramento State tallied 48.325 on vault.
Utah State had the individual winner on both events, with Heather Heinrich winning two of her four titles on the night. Heinrich scored 9.775 on vault and tied for first with teammate Amanda Watamaniuk on bars with 9.750s.
Freshman Nicole Meiller led the Hornets on vault with a 9.750 to place second overall. Amanda Blauvelt and Stubblefield tied for third with 9.700s. On bars, Lipka, Meiller and Blauvelt finished in a five-way tie for third with each receiving a 9.700.
The third rotation took the Hornets to floor where Lissa Zamolo placed third with a 9.775. Bethany Barrick, Boyce and Stubblefield tied for fourth at 9.725. A fifth score of 9.675 from Lipka gave the team a total of 48.625. While the Hornets were on floor, USU had its troubles on beam. The team was forced to count scores of 9.125 and 8.675 and finished with a total of 46.900.
Heinrich finished first on floor during the fourth rotation with a 9.825 and she also won the all-around with a total of 39.075.
In the beam standings, the Hornets claimed the top five spots.
Both teams will meet against next weekend as part of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Cal State Fullerton on Sat., March 27. Sacramento State won the title in 2006 and 2007, and placed second last season.
