GYMNASTICS SEES LATE LEAD SLIP AWAY IN LOSSES TO SAN JOSE STATE, UC DAVIS
2/26/2010
SAN JOSE, Calif. — It took season highs from both San Jose State and UC Davis to hand the Sacramento State gymnastics team a pair of losses in a three-team meet at Spartan Gym on Friday night. The Hornets scored 193.550 but were bettered by the host Spartans (194.550) and the Aggies (193.750).
Behind a season-high score of 48.975 on floor, Sacramento State held a slight edge entering the final rotation. However, that lead slipped away as the Hornets scored just 47.900 on vault compared to SJSU's 49.150 on floor and UCD's 48.825 on bars.
Sacramento State opened the meet on bars with a 48.600. The team counted four scores of at least 9.700 and was led by a 9.775 from Amanda Blauvelt. The junior was followed by Lauren Dyson (9.750), Nicole Meiller (9.725) and Eryn Stubblefield (9.700).
A week after recording a season high 49.000 on beam, the Hornets fell back to a respectful 48.075. Cayla Boyce won her second event title in as many weeks with a 9.775. Traci Takeda ranked second on the team at 9.625 and Jasmine Lipka added a 9.600. Sacramento State also counted a 9.550 from Lissa Zamolo and a 9.525 from Dayle Akamine.
On floor, Stubblefield and Boyce tied for third place overall with 9.825s and were closely followed by Bethany Barrick and Lipka who each recorded a 9.800. The final score of 9.725 came from Zamolo.
The final rotation was not as kind to Sacramento State. Blauvelt's season high of 9.750 tied her for four overall but she was the only Hornet to rank among the top 10 in the event. Meiller tied for 11th with a 9.650 and Zamolo placed 14th at 9.550. Takeda and Stubblefield completed the scorers at 9.500 and 9.450, respectively.
NOTES: Despite the loss, the Hornets will move up in the national rankings based upon its score…after not breaking the 193-plateau in their first three meets, the Hornets have now scored above that mark in their last four contests…the team will next compete at UC Davis on March 5 in a three-team meet which also includes Eastern Michigan.
