COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT FOR GYMNASTICS IN LOSS AT CAL STATE FULLERTON

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton grabbed an early lead and held on to defeat the Sacramento State gymnastics team, 193.375-192.900, Sunday afternoon at Titan Gym.

The Titans led by over a point at the halfway point with a 97.475-96.275 lead after two rotations before the Hornets began their comeback. Cal State Fullerton opened the met with a 48.900 on vault and added a 48.575 on bars.

The Hornets began the meet on bars and scored 48.300. Senior Amber Basgall claimed her first victory of the year with a 9.800 and was closely followed by Lauren Dyson’s 9.725. Amanda Blauvelt added a 9.700 and the team also counted a 9.650 from Cayla Boyce and a 9.425 from Lauren Mizuno.

On vault, the Hornets scored 47.975. For the second straight week, Alycia Chan grabbed top honors on the team with a 9.700. The other five scores on the squad were grouped between 9.500 and 9.625.

The Hornets began their comeback in the third rotation, scoring 47.925 on floor compared to a 47.250 on beam by Cal State Fullerton. Sacramento State was paced by Marina Boirosva’s meet best score of 9.825 on floor. Chan added a 9.625 and junior Eryn Stubblefield ranked third on the team with a 9.600.

The team saved its best for the final rotation where it scored 48.700 on beam. However, the Titans also had success on floor with a 48.650 which enabled the team to win the meet. On beam, junior Traci Takeda was first with a 9.825 to lead a Hornet sweep of the top three spots. Chan was second overall with a 9.800 and Stubblefield was third at 9.750. Borisova finished fifth with a 9.675.

Cal State Fullerton’s Shelly Cooper was first on vault with a 9.850 and Alaina Baker won the all-around with a total of 39.050.

Sacramento State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27, when it welcomes Boise State and Utah State to the Hornets Nest for a three-team meet. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
