SAN JOSE, Calif. — The depleted Sacramento State gymnastics team battled against San Jose State but came up just short in a 194.200-192.300 loss, Friday night at Spartan Gym.
Senior Marina Borisova finished first on beam and in the all-around and Lauren Dyson and Amanda Blauvelt tied for first on bars to pace the Hornets. Borisova has now won the all-around in four of the team’s five meets this year.
San Jose State, which is ranked 28th nationally, produced its second straight score of at least 194-points. Sacramento State dropped to 3-5 overall and competed without three projected starters.
The Spartans took an early lead after the first rotation scoring 48.750 on vault compared to a 48.350 from the Hornets on bars. San Jose State recorded four of the top five vault scores in the meet and were led by Lily Swann’s 9.850. On bars, the Hornets had five scores of at least 9.575. Blauvelt and Dyson paced the team with 9.750s. Borisova tied for seventh with a 9.650 and Cayla Boyce was eighth with a 9.625.
The two teams switched events in the second rotation and SJSU was able to push its advantage to nearly a point. Alise Blackwell tied Blauvelt and Dyson for top honors on bars with a 9.750 and Thomasina Wallace, Katie Merritt and Jessica Khoshnood each scored 9.725 to tie for fourth. The Hornets battled to stay close on vault. Traci Takeda recorded a mark of 9.725 to tie for fourth overall and Borisova scored 9.700 to place fifth.
Sacramento State pulled closer in the third rotation with a 48.100 on floor which was countered by a 47.975 from SJSU on beam. Borisova placed third overall on floor with a 9.775. Eryn Stubblefield tied for fourth at 9.725 and Lissa Zamolo scored 9.600. Blackwell had the top beam mark for the Spartans with a 9.725 which placed second.
The Hornets closed out the meet with a 47.800 on beam. Borisova won the event title with a 9.825 and Zamolo tied for third at 9.675. Takeda also placed in the top five with a 9.650. San Jose State secured the victory with a 48.900 on floor. SJSU counted five scores of at least 9.725 including 9.850s from Wallace and Veronica Porte which tied first place.
Borisova won the all-around by nearly a half-point as she produced a four-event total of 38.950. Wallace was second at 38.575 and was followed by Porte who scored 38.250.
The two teams will next compete in Sacramento on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m.
