TAKEDA AND BORISOVA EACH WIN EVENT TITLES AT SOUTHERN UTAH

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Junior Traci Takeda finished first on beam and senior Marina Borisova won on floor but it was not enough as the Sacramento State gymnastics team suffered a 195.250-193.900 loss at Southern Utah, Friday night at The Centrum.
Despite the loss, the Hornets (3-3, 0-1 WAC) scored their highest point total of the year. The meet was highlighted by Takeda who scored 9.925 on beam to move into a three-way tie for second place in school history. Melissa Genovese holds the school record with a 9.950. Takeda’s previous high was 9.750.
Sacramento State began the meet on bars and scored 48.450. The team was led by Borisova who scored 9.800 to tie for second overall. Sophomore Amanda Blauvelt tied for fourth with a 9.775 and freshman Cayla Boyce added a 9.700. The team also counted a 9.650 from junior Lauren Dyson and a 9.525 from Takeda.
While the Hornets were on bars, Southern Utah (1-1, 1-1) opened the meet on vault with a 48.925. The Thunderbirds were paced by Melissa Johnson’s meet high 9.900 and counted five scores of at least 9.700. SUU continued its momentum on bars in the second rotation with a 48.875. Elise Wheeler won the event title with a 9.875.
On vault, Sacramento State was paced by Takeda’s 9.750. Freshman Chantal Angyal was second on the team with a 9.675 while junior Eryn Stubblefield added a 9.625. Borisova and Boyce each scored 9.600.
The third rotation took the Hornets to floor. The team was forced to juggle its lineup after Angyal tore her Achilles during the three-minute touch warm-up but managed to score 48.450. Borisova scored 9.825 to win her second floor title in the three meets this season. Boyce was second on the team with a 9.750 and was closely followed by sophomore Jasmine Lipka’s career high 9.725. Sacramento State also counted a 9.625 from Lissa Zamolo and a 9.525 from Stubblefield.
The Hornets closed out the meet on beam and scored 48.750. Takeda opened the rotation with her career high and Borisova anchored the lineup with a 9.825 to tie for third place. Junior Lizzy Norvell was fifth at 9.775.
Wheeler edged Borisova in a battle of two of the WAC’s best all-arounders. Wheeler scored 39.326 while Borisova tallied a four-event total of 39.050.
Sacramento State, which has been on the road for its first three meets of the year, will hold its home opener on Friday, Jan. 30, against Illinois State at 7 p.m.
