GYMNASTICS SCORES SECOND HIGHEST SCORE OF THE SEASON BUT IS EDGED BY BOISE STATE

BOISE, Idaho — Senior Melissa Genovese and junior Marina Borisova tied for first place on balance beam but it was not enough as the Sacramento State gymnastics team fell to Boise State, 194.025-193.450, Friday night at Taco Bell Arena.

While the loss dropped the Hornets to 4-4 on the season, the team score was the second highest of the year for Sacramento State. Boise State, which was coming off a season best 196.425, improved to 7-1.

The Hornets opened the meet on bars and scored 48.200. The team was led by Borisova , who scored 9.700 and Amber Basgall and Alexis Tsurumoto who each posted a 9.675.

The second rotation saw Sacramento State move to vault and post a team score of 47.975. Freshman Alycia Chan continued to shine on the event with a 9.775 which tied her for second. Sophomore Eryn Stubblefield was fourth overall with a 9.700 and Borisova scored 9.575.

The Hornets scored their second highest score of the season on floor with a 48.525 in the third rotation. Borisova was the highest finisher for the team with a 9.775 to place fourth. Senior Nicole Giao, Stubblefield and Chan each tied for sixth with a 9.725.

The final rotation put Sacramento State on beam and, as has been the case all season, the Hornets responded with a strong score. Sacramento State counted five scores of at least 9.675 en route to a 48.525. Borisova and Genovese each scored 9.825 and finished a full tenth of a point ahead of Boise State’s Lindsay Ward and the Hornets’ Lizzy Norvell who tied for third. Stubblefield was fifth at 9.700 and Chan took sixth at 9.675.

The Broncos captured the individual title on the other three events. Hannah Redmon won vault with a 9.825, Taylor Jacob and Lindsay Ward each scored 9.850 to tie for the crown on bars, and Redmon also finished first on floor with a 9.875.

In the all-around Redmon (39.000) edged Borisova (38.875) for the top spot. Stubblefield finished third with a 38.675.

Sacramento State will next be in action on Sunday, March 2, when it hosts Alaska Anchorage at 2 p.m.
