GENOVESE NAMED WAC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND TIME THIS YEAR

2/18/2008

DENVER— Sacramento State senior Melissa Genovese was named the Western Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week, it was announced today. The honor is the second for Genovese this season and the third in the last two years.

Genovese helped the Hornets to a season high 194.675 and a victory over then No. 15-Southern Utah, Friday night at the Hornets Nest. The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native finished first on both beam and bars and also tied a school record in the process.

On beam, Genovese scored 9.925 to tie Nirvana Zaher’s school record which was set in 2002. The score bettered Genovese’s previous best of 9.900 which most recently came at the 2007 WAC Championships where she also placed first. During her four years with the team, Genovese has now scored 9.900 or better four times — the most in school history.

The accolades followed her to floor where she scored 9.850 to record her first victory in the event during her collegiate career.

Sacramento State will return to action on Friday, Feb. 22, when it travels to Boise State for a 6 p.m. PST meet.
