GYMNASTICS GEARS UP FOR WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

3/21/2006

The Sacramento State gymnastics team will look to make history this week and claim its first Western Athletic Conference title on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets are one of six teams vying for the WAC title which will be held at Utah State’s The Spectrum. The championship marks the first time the WAC will declare a gymnastics champion since 1993.

Sacramento State enters the meet with a 10-10 overall record but posted a 4-2 mark against conference foes during the season. Last week, the team posted a season-high 195.325 in a victory over UC Davis. The score marked the second-consecutive meet in which the Hornets scored above 195.000 — a first in school history. Against the Aggies, Brooke Morari finished first on floor, Amber Basgall won bars, Melissa Genovese and Kimiye Narasaki shared the honor on beam, and Trista Condren was the champion on floor.

Over the last six years, Sacramento State has had success at its conference championships. The team won two Western Independent titles (2000 & 2001) and three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation crowns (2002, 2003 & 2005). However, the challenge will be greater this season as all six WAC teams are currently ranked in the top 50. The group is led by Southern Utah which comes in ranked 25th in the latest standings. The Thunderbirds are followed by Boise State (28th), Sacramento State (30th), San Jose State (33rd), Utah State (37th) and Cal State Fullerton (49th).

All time, Sacramento State is 3-6 against Boise State, 7-13 against Cal State Fullerton, 31-18-1 against San Jose State, 0-3 against Southern Utah and 2-3 against Utah State.

The meet will be webcast with live streaming video for free on www.wac.tv. A DSL connection or faster is required along with Windows Media Player.
