BERKELEY, Calif. --- Sophomore Alexis Tsurumoto tied for first on bars to help lead Sacramento State to a second-place finish at a four-team meet hosted by Cal on Friday night. The Hornets scored a season-high 192.500 while 11th-ranked UCLA finished first at 196.500. Host Cal was third at 190.850 and UC Davis scored 190.300 to place fourth.Tsurumoto was one of five gymnasts to score 9.875 and tie for first. Cal’s Joanna Bennet and UCLA’s Kristina Comforte, Ashley Peckett and Kate Richardson also matched the Concord, Calif., native. Tsurumoto has now finished first in each of the last two meets and has at least tied for the title nine times in her short career.
Senior Kimiye Narasaki was sixth with a 9.850 and sophomore Amber Basgall recorded a career high with a 9.725 to place 12th. As a team, the Hornets eclipsed their season high with a score of 48.600
On vault, UCLA dominated, claiming the top six spots. Narasaki and senior Brooke Morari tied for ninth with 9.725s. Basgall tied for 11th at 9.700 while freshman Marina Borisova was one spot back after scoring 9.675. Sacramento State’s team score of 48.475 was also the best by the squad this season.
Beam was the most problematic of the four events for the Hornets. Sophomore Melissa Genovese led the way with a 9.750 to tie for fifth. Sophomore Nicole Giao was seventh after scoring 9.625 and Borisova was ninth at 9.500. From that point, the team had three falls and were forced to count two.
On floor, Borisova placed fifth with a 9.825 and was the highest finisher not from UCLA. Senior Carrie Kinghorn and Narasaki tied for ninth with a pair of 9.725s. The team also counted scores from Courtney Hibler (T13th, 9.600) and Morari (15th, 9.525).
In the all-around, UCLA’s Kate Richardrson — who finished first on vault, beam and floor — scored 39.575 to win the title. The Canadian Olympian was a half-point ahead of teammate Ariana Berlin. Narasaki finished fourth with a season-best 38.450.
Sacramento State will return home to take on San Jose State on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. inside the Hornets Nest. The Hornets are currently 2-0 against fellow Western Athletic Conference foes this season.
