1/14/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State gymnastics team recorded a higher team score than Cal on vault, tied the Golden Bears on beam and only lost on floor by .025 but it was bars that made the difference in the meet on Friday as Cal downed the Hornets, 191.625-190.475.

The Golden Bears scored 47.975 on bars while Sacramento State struggled to a 46.400. The 1.575 point differential proved to be the difference in the meet as the Hornets were never able to recover.

Sacramento State began the meet on vault where it received six solid efforts en route to a 48.000. Senior Kimiye Narasaki and freshman Marina Borisova tied for the meet high with a 9.650 to lead the way.

The Hornets held the lead following the first rotation as Cal scored 47.975 on bars. The Golden Bears recorded scores of 9.675 from Joanna Bennett, Nicki Wells and Britani Pittullo. All three tied for the meet high.

Cal took the lead in the meet during the second rotation. The Golden Bears scored 47.550 on vault with Pittullo matching Narasaki and Borisova’s 9.650. Jessica Kelley also added a 9.625.

The Hornets appeared to have a strong start on bars with a 9.450 from Melissa Genovese and a 9.625 from Narasaki. However, from that point, the team had three-straight routines with a fall which resulted in a score of 46.400.

Sacramento State recovered in the third rotation with a 48.000. Genovese tied for first in the meet with a 9.725 and Borisova was third at 9.700.

Cal added to its lead with a 48.100 on floor led by a 9.650 from Pittullo.

The Hornets'' hope for a comeback ended during the fourth rotation as Cal was solid on beam with a 48.000 and Sacramento State tallied a 48.075 on floor. Lydia Williams tied Genovese on beam with a 9.725. Senior Trista Condren captured the floor title with a 9.750. Sophomore Tiffany Bass tied for second at 9.700 for the Hornets.

The Golden Bears swept the top three all-around spots with Kelley atop the group with 38.450. Siobhan Luce and Pittullo tied for second at 38.200.
