GYMNASTICS TRIPPED UP BY SEATTLE PACIFIC

3/6/2005

SEATTLE --- Seattle Pacific overcame a half-point deficit heading into the final to claim a 192.375-191.950 gymnastics victory Saturday evening against Sacramento State.

The Hornets led 144.325-143.775 after three rotations, but struggled on beam while SPU produced a strong score on floor. The Hornets opened their rotation with a solid 9.650 from Trista Condren but then endured back-to-back 9.100s. The team saw its score slightly improve with a 9.350 from Nirvana Zaher before Kimiye Narasaki and Melissa Genovese made a late charge. Narasaki scored 9.750 while Genovese added a meet-best 9.775. On floor, the Falcons did not count a score below 9.625 and were aided by Debra Huss’ 9.825 to seal the victory.

Sacramento State began the meet on bars and were led by senior Meloney Greer who finished first with a 9.800. Narasaki and redshirt freshman Alexis Tsurumoto tied for third on the event with 9.650 and the Hornets were able to score 48.350 as a team.

Sacramento State then moved to vault where it tallied a 47.450. Usually one of the team’s top events this season, the Hornets did not record a top three individual finish on the apparatus. Freshman Nicole Giao finished fourth with a 9.600 to lead the team.

The third rotation placed Sacramento State on floor and the Falcons on beam. After a questionable low score in its first routine, Sacramento State received a 9.675 from Carrie Kinghorn. Narasaki followed with a 9.575 and Jessica Hoffman and Zaher each added a 9.750. The team completed its lineup with senior Stefanie Aeder who tallied a 9.775. Aeder’s score also included a .10 deduction for stepping out of bounds. That penalty cost her first place in the meet, forcing her to tie for second behind Huss.

Sacramento State will conclude its regular season with a pair of home meets. The first comes against UC Davis on Sunday, March 13. The second will be on Friday, March 18, against Cal State Fullerton. The team will then travel to UC Davis for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on March 25.
