GYMNASTICS RALLIES FOR VICTORIES OVER UC DAVIS, ALASKA ANCHORAGE

2/26/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior Nirvana Zaher won the all-around and tied for first on vault to help lead Sacramento State to victories over UC Davis and Alaska Anchorage Friday evening at the Hornets Nest. Zaher was one of four Hornet winners, joining freshman Alexis Tsurumoto on bars, freshman Melissa Genovese on beam and senior Stefanie Aeder on floor.

As a team, the Hornets overcame a deficit heading into the final rotation and ended the meet with 192.125. UC Davis scored 190.700 while Alaska Anchorage tallied 186.700. The pair of wins lifted Sacramento State to 8-7 on the year and put the team above .500 for the first time. UC Davis dropped to 5-8 while the Seawolves fell to 7-4.

Sacramento State opened the meet with a 48.025 on vault and added a 48.075 on bars to take a .425 lead over the Aggies into the third rotation. However, things began to unravel for the Hornets on beam and UC Davis scored well on bars to give the Aggies a 143.450-143.175 advantage going into the fourth rotation. Once there, Sacramento State produced a season-high 48.950 on floor while UCD managed a 47.250 on bars to give the Hornets the victory.

On floor, junior Sharee Burgess got Sacramento State rolling with a career-high 9.750. Carrie Kinghorn added a 9.675 and junior Kimiye Narasaki followed with a 9.750. The Hornets continued their consistency at the bottom of the order with a 9.725 from Jessica Hoffman and a 9.800 from Zaher. Aeder then matched her season-high with a 9.925 to win the meet. The score is tied for the second-best in school history, trailing only her own mark of 9.950.

Sacramento State started strong on vault, counting five scores above 9.550. The group was led by Zaher’s 9.700 which tied for first place with Joanne Pizzo of UC Davis and Alaska Anchorage’s Dominique Ingram. Genovese, who was a late addition to the lineup in place of the injured Meloney Greer, scored a career-high 9.625 to begin the lineup for Sacramento State.

The team then shifted to bars where Tsurumoto blew away the field. The freshman claimed her sixth win of the season with a 9.825. That mark was .15 points better than Hoffman who finished second with a 9.675. Freshman Amber Basgall also contributed a career-best 9.525.

The Hornets’ momentum continued through its first beam performance where Trista Condren scored 9.575. However, the team was derailed by a pair of falls from Hoffman and a couple of wobbles from Aeder. Zaher stayed on and scored 9.500 before Kimiye Narasaki (who won beam last week at Arizona State) also fell twice. Genovese responded with a solid 9.850 to conclude the rotation and keep the Hornets in the hunt.

Sacramento State, which is currently ranked 32nd in the nation and fourth in the west region, will next travel to Seattle Pacific on Saturday, March 5. The team’s next home meet comes against UC Davis on Sunday, March 13, at 2 p.m.
