GYMNASTICS FALLS TO SAN JOSE STATE

1/28/2005

SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Stefanie Aeder, Alexis Tsurumoto and Nirvana Zaher each won individual titles but it was not enough as the Sacramento State gymnastics team was defeated by San Jose State, 191.950-189.500, Friday night at Spartan Gym.

Aeder captured her third floor title of the season after scoring 9.85. Tsurumoto won bars for the third time this season with a 9.800 and Zaher was the winner on vault with a 9.75. However, the Hornets had four falls on both beam and floor and dropped to 3-6 on the season.

Conversely, the Spartans (3-0) were steady on all four events en route to scoring their best score of the season.

Sacramento State led following each of the first two rotations (bars, vault) but slipped behind after its third rotation. The Hornets opened the meet with a 48.225 on bars and followed with 48.050 on vault. Those scores gave the team a 96.275-95.800 lead at the halfway point. The team then struggled on floor, scoring a season-low 47.100 and saw its lead slip away. Any hopes of a comeback ended when Sacramento State amassed a 46.125 on beam while the Spartans scored 48.200 on floor.

Along with the three event winners, Sacramento State also had four other top-three performers. Senior Jessica Hoffman was second on vault with a 9.675. Senior Meloney Greer was second on bars with a 9.750. Freshman Melissa Genovese tied for third on beam at 9.600 and Zaher tied for third on floor with a 9.700.

The two teams will face each other next Friday, Feb. 4, at the Hornets Nest. The meet will begin at 7 p.m.
