GYMNASTICS DOWNS BROWN, HUGHES REACHES MILESTONE

1/16/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Four Sacramento State gymnasts combined to win the four events and the all-around title as the Hornets defeated Brown, 188.750-183.875, Sunday afternoon at the Hornets Nest. The victory improved Sacramento State to 2-3 on the season and earned head coach Kim Hughes his 200th career win. The Bears fell to 0-3.

Senior Jessica Hoffman sparked Sacramento State in the first two rotations, winning both vault and bars. Hoffman scored 9.800 on vault to finish just ahead of freshman teammate Nicole Gaio (9.750). The Hornets swept the top five places as Nirvana Zaher (9.725), Melissa Genovese (9.525) and Carrie Kinghorn (9.500) finished third through fifth, respectively. On bars, Hoffman recorded a 9.650. Sacramento State junior Kimiye Narasaki and Kinghorn tied for second at 9.550.

As a team, the Hornets scored 48.300 on vault as the squad counted five scores of at least 9.500. Things, however, turned south on bars as three of the six competitors fell, resulting in a 46.650 team score. Brown also had its problems early, scoring 45.425 on bars and 46.175 on vault.

In the third rotation, Narasaki won her second beam title in the last three days with a 9.725. Melissa Forziat of Brown was second (9.625) while Kinghorn rounded out the top three with a 9.475. Sacramento State struggled on beam, with four competitors falling off the apparatus.

The Hornets rebounded on floor, sweeping the top six places. Senior Stefanie Aeder scored 9.750 to win the individual title for the second-straight meet. Kinghorn (9.625), Sharee Burgess (9.625), Zaher (9.575), Condren (9.550) and Hoffman (9.525) completed the field for the team.

Kinghorn set a career-high in the all-around, winning the event with a total of 38.150. The junior had not competed as an all-arounder until the start of this season. Hoffman was second at 37.375 and Brown’s Amber Smith (36.850) was third

Sacramento State will next travel to Southern California to compete in a four-team meet hosted by two-time defending national champion UCLA. The meet also features Cal and Cal State Fullerton. The Hornets’ next home meet comes on Friday, Feb. 4, against San Jose State. The meet against the Spartans will start at 7 p.m.
