AEDER, COLEMAN, GREER AND ZAHER SELECTED TO NCAA WEST REGIONALS

3/22/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Binta Coleman and juniors Stefanie Aeder, Meloney Greer and Nirvana Zaher were selected as event specialists for the NCAA West Regionals on Saturday, April 3, in Corvallis, Ore., it was announced today. Junior Jessica Hoffman (vault) and freshman Tiffany Bass (balance beam) were each named alternates for their respective events.

Coleman and Zaher will compete as all-arounders while Aeder (floor) and Greer (bars) make the trip as event specialists. Sacramento State has now sent multiple all-arounders to a West regional competition, in consecutive seasons, for the first time in program history. The four representatives are also the most in program history.

Coleman, a native of Elk Grove, Calif., will make her first post-season appearance after ranking 23rd in the West Region with a 38.830 Regional Qualifying Score. Coleman, who won the Western Independent all-around title as a freshman, scored 39.350 at the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships to break the school record of 39.325 set by Toni Petersen at the 2002 MPSF Championships. The score marked the second time this season and the fifth time in her career that Coleman has scored higher than 39.000. Along with her all-around record, Coleman’s 9.900 bar total at the 2003 MPSF Championships is tied for sixth in school history.

A native of Cairo, Egypt, Zaher earned her second-consecutive regional bid after finishing 22nd with an RQS of 38.860. Zaher finished with a career-high 39.150 at the 2003 MPSF Championships and the mark places her fifth in the program record book for the event. She also holds the sixth-highest mark for the event with a 39.100 on Feb. 20. Zaher defended her MSPF vault crown with a 9.875 to tie for ninth-best at Sacramento State. She has now won an individual title in each of her three seasons with the team (beam 2002, vault 2003). Zaher also matched her career-high with a 9.900 on floor to tie for eighth in the meet.

Aeder is competing in the West Regionals for the first time after placing tied for 16th in the region with a 9.885 RQS. The Portland, Ore., native holds the top two marks in program history for floor exercise after tallying a program-best 9.950 (Mar. 12) and a 9.925 (2004 MPSF Champs.). She also cracked the top-10 for the even with a 9.900 on Feb. 8. Aeder competed healthy for the first time since 2002 after recovering from wrist and elbow injuries to her right arm last year. Due to the injuries, she competed solely on floor but tumbled with a closed fist for a majority of the season.

Greer also earned her first regional selection after ranking 26th with an RQS of 9.825. A native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Greer tied the second-best mark in program history on bars with a 9.925 on Mar. 12 at the Hornets Nest. She followed up her performance with the sixth-highest mark (9.900) at the 2004 MPSF Championships a week later. Greer also set a career-best mark on vault with a 9.825 on Mar. 5 at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational.

Sacramento State barely missed its second West Regional bid by a margin of .19 RQS points. In 2002, the squad missed post-season competition by only a .07 margin. Despite have its four-year conference title streak ended with a second-place finish at the 2004 MPSF Championships, Sacramento State set new programs marks for overall score (195.875), team vault (49.050) and balance beam (48.800).
