GYMNASTICS SCORES TOP MARK OF THE YEAR IN WIN OVER SEATTLE PACIFIC

1/23/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Senior Binta Coleman captured three event titles and recorded a career-best 39.250 in the all-around to help Sacramento State to a convincing 194.025-189.350 victory over Seattle Pacific Friday evening at the Hornets Nest.

The victory improved the Hornets to 3-4 on the season while the Falcons dropped to 0-3.

Sacramento State’s total score is the team’s top mark this season, eclipsing the 192.650 which was set last week at SPU. The total is also the ninth-best in school history.

The Hornets opened the meet by scoring 48.400 on vault. The team then struggled on bars — one of its strongest events this season — posting 47.975. Sacramento State, however, bounced back on its next rotation, tallying 48.675 on beam (tied for fourth in school history). The team continued its momentum on to floor where it posted a 48.400, also a season high.

Coleman led a balanced attack from the Hornets, finishing first on bars, beam and floor. The Elk Grove, Calif., native recorded season-highs on all three events, including a career-high 9.875 on floor. Her all-around total is also a personal best and ranks only behind Toni Petersen (39.325) in the school’s record books.

Nirvana Zaher also cracked the top 10 in the all-around with a mark of 38.950. Zaher tied for first on vault, tied for second on beam and was third on bars to help her cause.

Sacramento State claimed each of the four individual titles as junior Jessica Hoffman tied Zaher on vault. In fact, the Hornets swept the top three spots in both vault and bars.

The Hornets will now take their longest break from competition this season as the team will not compete until Feb. 8 when it visits Cal State Fullerton.
