HOFFMAN AND ZAHER PLACE AT THE NCAA WEST REGIONALS

SEATTLE -- Sophomores Jessica Hoffman and Nirvana Zaher each placed at the NCAA West Regionals Saturday evening at Bank of America Arena. The duo, who qualified for regional competition for the first time in their collegiate careers, represented the Sacramento State gymnastics team as all-arounders.

Freshman Kimiye Narasaki, who was supposed to perform as a vault specialist, injured her knee during her final practice vault and was unable to compete.

Hoffman, a native of Escondido, Calif., placed 18th with an all-around score of 38.000. She finished with scores of 9.600 on vault, 9.750 on bars, 8.950 on beam and 9.700 on floor. Hoffman’s bar mark placed her 19th overall at the meet. She finished the 2003 season with a Regional Qualifying Score of 38.130 in her first season as an all-arounder. Hoffman recorded career highs on every event this season including an all-around score of 38.600. The sophomore tallied a score of 9.700 on vault at the MPSF Championships on March 29. She also recorded a personal-best mark of 9.825 on bars and 9.800 on floor. On beam, she finished with a mark of 9.675 on two occasions this year.

Zaher placed 13th with a mark of 38.325 as an all-arounder. The Cairo, Egypt, native also finished with scores of 9.700 on vault, 9.650 on bars, 9.225 on beam and 9.750 on floor. Zaher’s floor mark placed her 13th at the event while her vault score placed her 20th. During the year, she finished with an RQS of 38.500 in her first season of all-around competition. Zaher finished with a career-high 39.150 at the MPSF Championships and the mark placed her third in the program record book for the event. The sophomore also captured her second-consecutive MPSF event title with a 9.775 on vault. She led the Hornets in all-around scores in six of 14 meets this season, including the past five competitions.

In her first season with the program, Narasaki tallied an RQS of 9.745 on vault. She registered a personal-best 9.900 on Jan. 18 and became the first Hornet to record at least a 9.900 on the event since Rebecca Seebirt in 1997. The freshman also recorded a score of at least 9.800 on the event in three meets this season.
