SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Ericka Ruelas won the all-around with a score of 38.650 to lead UC Davis to a 193.400-192.125 victory over the Sacramento State gymnastics team in the Hornets’ home finale Friday evening at Hornet Gym. The Hornets’ score snapped a program-high four-meet streak in which the squad broke the 193-plateau.The Aggies raised their record to 12-7 on the season while the Hornets fell to 8-6.
Sacramento State lead after two rotations (96.900-96.675) before the Hornets recorded a score of 46.225 on beam compared to the Aggies 48.725 on floor. UC Davis sealed the win in the final rotation with a score of 48.000 on beam.
Junior Toni Petersen placed first on beam (9.75) and floor (9.9) to lead the Hornets. Petersen also led the squad with an all-around score of 38.125. The Fresno, Calif., native has now led the squad in all-around competition in seven of 10 meets.
Senior Lori Gillette placed first on bars and tied a program record for the event with a score of 9.95. The Encinitas, Calif., native tied fellow senior Wendy Baisdon who set the mark on March 14, 1999. Junior Brooke Crowell led all competitors with a vault of 9.75 to round out the Hornets’ top finishers.
Baisdon, a native of Ceres, Calif., recorded a season-high 9.85 on bars to place third and freshman Meloney Greer tallied a 9.825 on bars to place fourth in the event. It was Greer’s first competition since injuring her big toe on the lower bar on March 10 at Hornet Gym. Senior Lara Goold registered a 9.7 on vault to place third in the meet.
Seniors Melissa Prescott, Karen Sorensen, Beth O’Connor, Baisdon, Gillette and Goold competed in their final home meet of their Hornets careers.
Also placing well for the squad were freshman Nirvana Zaher (9.725, second) and junior Jenny Diamond (9.8, third) on floor.
Ruelas, a native of Sacramento, Calif., also placed second on bars (9.9) and beam (9.725) to help the Aggies record their third-highest score in program history. UC Davis also received career highs from junior Lynne Schwaebe (9.8, bars), freshman Tiffany Chan (9.625, vault), senior Stacy Wong (9.575, vault), freshman Nicole Doherty (9.55, beam), and sophomore Amber Weddell. Wong (38.400) and Schwaebe (38.325) also recorded career bests in all-around competition.
Sophomore Binta Coleman did not compete in the meet due to a hyperextended knee suffered early in the week during practice. The Elk Grove, Calif., native sat out Friday’s meet to rest for the Hornets’ next competition.
Sacramento State, who own the No. 6 spot in the West Region rankings, will return to action on Saturday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. as the Hornets travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face regional rivals Boise State, Cal and San Jose State at Haas Pavilion. With a score of 193 or higher, the Hornets can raise their RQS average by dropping a road score of 190.850 against UC Davis on Feb. 1 at Recreation Hall.
