SAN JOSE, Calif. – Sacramento State recorded its fifth-highest score in program history with a 194.100 as the Hornet gymnastics team competed against Cal State Fullerton and San Jose State Friday evening at Spartan Gym. It was the first time in program history that the Hornets have recorded a score of 193 or higher in three-consecutive meets.The Titans raised their record to 7-9 on the season with a meet-high 195.300 while the Spartans dropped to 11-5 with a third-place score of 193.325. The Hornets now have a 7-5 overall record.
The Hornets recorded scores of 48 or higher on every event during the evening including a team high of 48.750 on beam. Junior Jenny Diamond and freshman Nirvana Zaher tied for third on beam with scores of 9.8. For Diamond, a native of Murray, Utah, the mark tied her career high for the event. Sacramento State also received season highs on beam by seniors Wendy Baisdon (9.725) and Melissa Prescott (9.7) and junior Toni Petersen (9.725).
On vault, Zaher tied for third with a career-high 9.8 and senior Lara Goold placed fifth with a season-high mark of 9.75. On bars, senior Lori Gillette placed second with a career-high tying 9.875 and Baisdon earned the fifth-best score on the event with a season-high 9.825. On floor, Diamond tied for second with a career-high score of 9.875 to round out the Hornets in the top five.
Also placing well for the Hornets were sophomore Binta Coleman (9.675, vault, 9.7, floor) and freshmen Dana Raeber (9.675, bars), Meloney Greer (9.75, bars) and Zaher (9.75, floor).
Petersen did not compete all-around due to a neck injury suffered after a fall on bars on March 3 against Cal. The Fresno, Calif., native had led the Hornets in all-around competition for the past five meets. Coleman finished with a score of 37.850 to lead the squad.
Cal State Fullerton led from start to finish after recording season highs on vault (48.650), bars (49.125) and beam (48.875) to help lead to its highest score of the season. Junior Kelly Mathiasen led all competitors with an all-around score of 39.375 and a 9.9 on floor. Senior Joanna Hughes placed first on vault (9.925) and beam (9.925) to also lead the Titans.
San Jose State recorded season highs on vault (48.500) and floor (49.025) to contribute to its season-high score. Sophomore Shirla Choy finished second all-around with a 38.800, senior Kimmy Cianci led all competitors with a 9.9 on floor and junior Dani Albright finished second on vault with a score of 9.85 to lead the Spartans.
Sacramento State will return to Hornet Gym on Sunday, March 10, at 4 p.m. as the Hornets host San Jose State for a rematch at Hornet Gym.
