SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team has signed Jesse Williams and Cassie Benning to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today by head coach Kim Hughes. Both will enroll as freshmen at the University in the fall of 2012.
"I believe both of these girls have the ability to become all-arounders," Hughes said. "They each will make an immediate impact and have a good balance of style and difficulty. Both of them are also outstanding students."
Williams currently competes for Waller's GymJam in Santa Clarita, Calif. In 2011, she finished sixth on vault at the Level 10 Regionals. She was also second on floor, fourth on bars and fifth in the all-around at the 2011 Level 10 state meet. The previous year, Williams was seventh on beam at the Level 10 Regionals. At the 2010 Level 10 state meet, she was second in the all-around, on vault, beam and floor and third on beam.
"Jesse is powerful on vault and with her tumbling on floor," Hughes said. "She also has very strong dance on floor which makes for a nice routine."
Benning is a local product from Roseville, Calif., who represents Byers Gymnastics. In 2010, she placed second in the all-around at the Level 10 Regional. A talented bar worker, Benning was the NorCal state champion in the event in 2009 and 2010.
"Cassie is very dynamic on bars and floor," Hughes said. "She has a unique level of difficulty on bars with skills that are not common at this level."
