Randy Solorio was named the Head Gymnastics Coach on Sept. 1, 2016 and serving a year in an interim capacity. Solorio is just the fourth head coach in school history and takes over the program after spending 30 years as an assistant and associate head coach under former head coach Kim Hughes.

During his first season leading the team, Solorio guided the Hornets to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship and saw four of his gymnasts advance to the NCAA West Regional. During the year, the team recorded the top two scores in Sacramento State history. The first came at home against San Jose State where the Hornets amassed a total of 196.475. Exactly one month later, the team scored 196.300 to capture it’s second MPSF title in the last three years and it’s ninth conference crown since 2000.

The Hornets recorded a top 10 total score and advanced at least three gymnasts to NCAA regionals the in 2017 and 2018. Sacramento State scored 195.550 in a four-team meet at Texas Woman's in 2017 which ranked seventh in school history. The following season, the team totaled 195.400 at home against San Jose State and Seattle Pacific to tie for the 10th highest all-time at Sacramento State. Along with the regular season success, Sacramento State sent Lauren Rice and Caitlin Soliwoda to the NCAA Seattle Regional as all-arounders in 2017 along with Courtney Soliwoda (beam) and Julia Konner (bars). In 2018, Annie Juarez (all-arounders) joined the Soliwodas at the NCAA Salt Lake Regional.

Solorio was also named to the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Committee in 2018. In that role, he helps establish rule changes for the sport and oversees the national championships. He earned several honors during his time as an assistant with the Hornets. He was the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 1990 and 2006, the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997 and earned the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015.

Solorio and Hughes were first acquainted in 1978 when the duo began coaching at The Gymnastics School and River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento. Solorio ended his tenure with the club in 1982 to pursue his theatre career. He returned to Sacramento in 1986 as the longest tenured partnership at Sacramento State began.

A three-time All-American on vault, high bar and floor exercise while competing for UC Davis from 1980-82, Solorio is responsible for all aspects of coaching from on-floor duties to recruiting and conditioning.

Solorio holds a bachelor of science degree in exercise science and a master’s in sports performance from Sacramento State and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He can often be found teaching weight training, ballroom dancing and other physical education classes as part of his campus-wide activity.

Solorio’s coaching experience has varied from high school and club programs to the collegiate level. He was a class and team coach for Byers Gymnastics Center in Sacramento and coached the girls’ gymnastics team at Valley High School.

Not only a gifted gymnast and coach, Solorio has found much success performing in local theater, musicals, commercials and in modeling. In addition, Solorio toured nationally with The Muppet Show on Tour, and Show Your Spirit.

His daughter, Kaycee Marie, was born the day after the Hornets finished second at the USAG Nationals in 1996.
