BRENT LEADS GYMNASTICS TO SEASON HIGH IN WIN OVER SAN JOSE STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jordyn Brent finished first and at least tied her career high on bars, beam and in the all-around to lift the Sacramento State gymnastics team to a 192.600-192.500 victory over San Jose State at The Nest on Friday night.

Brent broke 39 points for the first time in her career to claim her first all-around title. The Los Angeles native opened the meet with a 9.675 on vault to place fifth overall. She followed with a 9.850 on bars to tie her career best and added a 9.650 on beam. Brent closed the night on floor with a career high 9.875 to give her a four-event total of 39.050. Prior to Friday, Brent had not score better than 38.875.

Sacramento State held a slight lead after the first rotation as each team was forced to count a low score. The Hornets totaled 47.625 on vault while SJSU scored 47.350 on bars. Brent led the Hornets in the event and was closely followed by Lauren Schmeiss (9.650) and Destiny Watley (9.625).

The team surged in the second rotation, matching the Spartans' mark on vault as each team posted a score 48.475. The score destroyed the Hornets' previous high of 46.900 this season on bars. All six gymnasts at least tied their career best. Sophomore Courtnee Marquez finished in second place with a career high of 9.775. Destiny Watley was fourth at 9.725, Ambert Koeth placed seventh (9.700), Alexis Belkoff was eighth (9.525) and Shaye Mathias was ninth (9.500).

The momentum appeared to carry over to beam where Kendra Braida opened the rotation with a career high 9.850 which placed her second overall. From there, however, the next best score was 9.725 from Mathias and the team finished with a score of 47.850. At the same time, San Jose State had success on floor with a 48.275 and the Spartans took a 144.100-143.950 lead into the final rotation.

Senior Carly Pratt scored 9.700 in the team's first routine on floor and was matched by the Spartans' Josalyn Ray on beam to keep SJSU in the lead. The Hornets moved ahead with a 9.750 from Braida. San Jose State had a pair of falls in the middle of its lineup but rallied late with a 9.900 from Chelsey Andrada and a 9.850 from Taylor Chan. Brent secured the win with her 9.875.

Sacramento State will return the trip to San Jose State next week in a three-team meet which also includes New Hampshire on Friday, Feb. 15.
