DAVIS, Calif. — Sacramento State scored a season high 194.400 and had individual event winners on bars and floor on Friday night at The Pavilion. The Hornets finished in third place behind Utah State (195.000) and UC Davis (194.525).
Sacramento State opened on bars and scored well for the second consecutive meet. The Hornets had four scores of at least 9.725 and finished the rotation with a 48.750. Freshman Jordyn Brent led the team with a career high 9.850 to win her second individual title on the event this season. After a 9.800 from Annie Juarez, Caitlin Soliwoda produced a 9.850 for her season best. Courtney Soliwoda provided the final score toward the team total with a 9.725. The team score was the second best for the Hornets this season on any event and followed a 48.825 on bars last weekend at Alaska Anchorage.
"Jordyn just makes (bars) look so easy," Sacramento State head coach Randy Solorio said. " She practices the exact same way she competes and it all comes very natural to her."
Despite counting a fall, Sacramento State still managed a season high on beam with a 48.550. After two falls in the first three routines, the final three gymnasts each scored 9.8-plus to spark the team. Juarez started the stretch with a career high 9.800. The score escalated with a season best 9.850 from Caitlin Soliwoda and Courtney Soliwoda capped the rotation with a career high 9.875. Those scores helped Sacramento State to a total of 97.300 at the midway point of the meet and placed the Hornets .175 behind Utah State and .125 ahead of UC Davis.
All three teams found themselves within two-tenths of each other after the third rotation. Sacramento State scored 48.450 on floor during the event to raise its total to 145.750. Juarez earned her first individual title in the event since Jan. 21 of last season after scoring a career high-tying 9.875. Caitlin Soliwoda finished in eighth place and ranked second on the team with a 9.725 and Jennifer Brenner tied for ninth at 9.675.
The team closed the meet on vault with a 48.650 but could not get past either of the Aggie teams. Sacramento State was consistent as a team, counting five scores between 9.675 and 9.775. Courtney Soliwoda led the way with a tie for third place at 9.775 which tied her career best. Brent set a career best and tied for fifth at 9.750.
"I'm happy with our score but know it could be better," Solorio said. "We counted a fall again tonight and if that hadn't happened we'd have finished over 195. The team is beginning to figure it out and I know we have the talent to score high."
The Hornets had two gymnasts go over 39 points in the all-around for the first time this season. Juarez set a career best of 39.150 and Caitlin Soliwoda had a season high 39.125. Those two scores left the pair in second and third behind UC Davis' Alexis Brown who scored 39.275.
Sacramento State returns home next Friday, Feb. 16, to host San Jose State and Seattle Pacific. The meet will start at 7 p.m. in The Nest.
