GYMNASTICS SUFFERS SET BACK AT SAN JOSE STATE

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Freshman Kendra Braida earned a share of the top spot on beam for the second consecutive week but the Sacramento State gymnastics was topped by San Jose State on Friday night at The Events Center, 194.425-191.775.

The Hornets started the night on bars where they were led by Courteney Ng. The senior scored 9.725 from the top spot in the order to place second in the meet. Caitlin Soliwoda tied for third with a 9.700 and freshman Jordyn Brent score 9.675 to tie for fifth place.

Sacramento State then turned its attention to vault where it scored a season best 48.575. Caitlin Soliwoda tied for second place with a 9.800, Annie Juarez scored 9.775 to rank fifth and Alexis Belkoff was seventh with a 9.700. Despite the high score, the Hornets trailed SJSU by just over a half point, 97.250-96.725, at the midway mark of the meet.

The meet derailed for the team on the next two events as Sacramento State was forced to count at least one fall on floor and beam. Carly Pratt was inserted late into the floor lineup but responded with a 9.700 to start the rotation. That score would hold as the best on the team until Annie Juarez received a 9.775 to finish in third place overall. The team finished with an event total of 47.625 and fell further back of San Jose State as the Spartans scored 48.425 on beam.

In the final event, Braida led off with a 9.750 on vault. The Elk Grove native tied for first along with the SJSU's Katie Won and Taylor Chan. Braida's effort followed her 9.800 at Utah State last week. Junior Lauren Schmeiss later added a 9.725 in her first competitive routine since an ankle injury cut her season short a year ago. Caitlin Soliwoda ranked third on the team with a 9.700.

Sacramento State will have its fourth of five meets on the road this season when it competes at Alaska Anchorage next Friday, Feb. 2. Alaska Anchorage is coached by former Hornet assistant Tanyo Ho who is in her first season. The meet will also include Air Force.
