SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Randy Solorio has been named the head gymnastics coach at Sacramento State, it was announced by Director of Athletics Bill Macriss. Solorio served as the interim head coach during the 2016 season after nearly three decades as an assistant.

Last season, Solorio guided the Hornets to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship and saw four of his gymnasts advance to the NCAA West Regional. During the year, the team recorded the top two scores in Sacramento State history. The first came at home against San Jose State where the Hornets amassed a total of 196.475. Exactly one month later, the team scored 196.300 to capture it's second MPSF title in the last three years and it's ninth conference crown since 2000.

"Promoting Randy to full-time coach was a very easy decision to make," Director of Athletics Bill Macriss said. "In addition to 30 years of service to the University, Randy and his staff brought a renewed enthusiasm and commitment to the job and continued the long history of success of Hornet gymnastics."

Solorio began his coaching career at Sacramento State in 1986 as an assistant to Kim Hughes. During that time, he was twice named the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year and also garnered the USA Gymnastics and MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year.

"I'm excited and honored to me named the fourth head coach in the history of the Sacramento State gymnastics program" Solorio said. "It's been a very easy transition since Kim Hughes and I spent so many years together and I did not try to recreate the wheel."

The Sacramento native has also coached at several area clubs.

Solorio competed collegiately at UC Davis where he was a three-time All-American on vault, high bar and floor. He graduated from Sacramento State with a degree in exercise science and added a master's in sports performance. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist.

Not only a gifted gymnast and coach, Solorio has found much success performing in local theater, musicals, commercials and in modeling. In addition, Solorio toured nationally with The Muppet Show on Tour, and Show Your Spirit.
