SAN JOSE, Calif. — Kalliah McCartney scored 39.350 to tie for the second-highest all-around score in school history but Sacramento State could not hold its lead and fell at San Jose State, 193.575-193.050.
McCartney was first on beam and floor, tied for first on vault and tied for second on bars to claim her fourth all-around title in as many meets this season. The Vancouver, Wash., native tied her career high on floor while her all-around score was just .025 off her own school record.
As a team, the Hornets led through each of the first three rotations but had four falls (counting two) on beam. Despite the early miscues, the back half of the Hornet lineup attempted to guide Sacramento State to the victory with a 9.650 from Elideth Guerrero, a 9.750 from Cayla Beutler and a 9.850 by McCartney.
Sacramento State began the meet on bars where senior Nicole Meiller won the event with a 9.875 and McCartney added a 9.825. Freshman Cassie Benning also contributed a 9.775 to help the team to a score of 48.250.
On vault, the Hornets tallied 48.600 with five scores of at least 9.650. McCartney and Benning each scored 9.775 to share the event title and Meiller tied for third at 9.725. SJSU was able to pull closer during the second rotation with the help of a 48.850 on beam but Sacramento State still led 96.850-96.375 at the midway point.
Sacramento State extended its lead during the third rotation with a season-high 48.925 on floor. Dallas Smith opened with a 9.700 and Katie Osaki and Cayla Beutler each contributed 9.750s. Benning followed with a 9.825, which placed her second overall, and McCartney scored 9.900 to win for the second time this year. Those scores provided the Hornets with a 145/775-144.925 lead heading into beam.
The team will next travel to Los Angeles to face No. 4 UCLA, Washington and UC Davis in a four-team meet on Sunday, Feb. 10. The meet will air on the Pac-12 Network at 2 p.m.
