SHUTLER FINISHES IN FIFTH, WOMEN'S GOLF SIXTH AT LEXUS CLASSIC

Julie Shutler finished fifth to pace Sacramento State at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
FRESNO, Calif. —Julie Shutler recorded her second consecutive top five finish to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team on Tuesday at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. The Hornets finished sixth in the team standings while Shutler was fifth.
Cal State Fullerton captured the team title with a three-round total of 893. The Titans finished four strokes ahead of San Jose State and were 17 strokes better than host Fresno State and Nevada which tied for third. Wyoming completed the top five with a total of 914.
Sacramento State shot 305-303-310-918 as a team and had the best score among the three Big Sky Conference teams in the field. Montana totaled 937 to place ninth and Portland State was 10th at 940.
Shutler shot 75-70-78-223 to finish fifth. The senior was eight strokes off the pace of San Jose State's Madeline Ziegert who became the medalist with rounds of 70, 72 and 73.
On Tuesday, Hall got off to a quick start with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3. She made the turn at 1-over but recorded five pars and four bogeys on the back nine.
Brakel opened with three pars before a birdie on the par-4 fourth. Bogeys on three of the next four holes led to a double-bogey on the par-4 ninth which left her at 4-over through nine. Brakel then jumped to 6-over with consecutive bogeys on 10 and 11 but she bounced back with birdies on 12 and 16 along with four pars before bogeying the par-4 18th.
Shutler, who ended her second round by birdying five of her final seven holes, started Tuesday with four bogeys and three pars in her first seven holes. The Manteca, Calif., native responded with six straight pars and played her final 11 holes at 2-over.
Palavivatana shot 39 on the front with six pars and three bogeys. Her back nine consisted of a birdie on the par-5 13th, five pars, two bogeys and a double-bogey.
Overall, Brakel tied for 22nd place with a three-round total of 232. Brakel tied for 33rd, and Palavivatana and Chen tied for 42nd place (236). Freshman Samantha Stockton, who was competing as an individual, tied for 53rd with a total of 81-78-71-240.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Anteater Invitational hosted by UC Irvine on March 26-27.
