Lexie Hall shot 71 for her career low in the third round of the Folino Invitational.
INDUSTRY HILLS, Calif. — Senior Julie Shutler finished fourth at the Folino Invitational to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team. The senior closed the event at 78-70-74-222 for her first top five finish since tying for fifth place at the Cal Poly Invitational in November of 2009.
As a team, the Hornets posted their second consecutive round of 308 to finish the event with a three-round score of 940. Sacramento State was fifth in the 12-team field behind Gonzaga (897), Cal State Fullerton (910), Long Beach State (918), and Montana (925).
Shutler rebounded from a tough first round to shoot 222 for the tournament — her second best 54-hole total in her career. Her score was just two strokes off the pace of medalist Tara Green of Montana.
On Tuesday, freshman Lexie Hall carded an even-par 71 to lead Sacramento State. Hall, who finished in a tie for 23rd overall, tied for the lowest round of the day while setting her collegiate best. Hall opened on the 13th hole and was 2-over after her first three holes. She then birdied the par-3 17th before running off four consecutive pars. A bogey on the par-4 4th moved her back to 2-over before back-to-back birdies on the 6th and 7th made her even. Hall then parred her next two holes before a bogey on 10 was followed by a birdie on the par-5 11th and par on 12.
Shutler ranked second on the team with a 74. The Manteca, Calif., native mixed 10 pars and four bogeys over her first 14 holes before birdies on 10 and 11. Shutler had an opportunity to finish in a tie for second on entering her final hole but bogeyed the par-3 13th to finish at 3-over.
Justine Chen recorded a 79 for the second consecutive day. Chen's round featured two birdies, eight pars, six bogeys, and a pair of double-bogeys. Her 54-hole total of 245 tied her for 44th place.
Kercia Brakel and Sagee Palavivatana each shot 84 on Tuesday. Brakel had seven pars, 10 bogeys and a triple-bogey. Palavivatana's round featured a birdie, seven pars, six bogeys and four double-bogeys.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on March 12-13.
