SHUTLER SHOOTS 1-UNDER PAR 71 TO LEAD WOMEN'S GOLF AT RAINBOW WAHINE INVITATIONAL

11/2/2011

Julie Shutler

KAPOLEI, Hawaii —
Senior Julie Shutler shot a season low 71 in the final round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Wednesday at the Kapolei Golf Course.

Shutler began the third round on the ninth hole and immediately had a run of five straight pars before a birdie on the par-5 14th dropped her to one under. A bogey on the par-4 15th took her back to even where she remained until bogeying the par-5 17th. From that point, Shutler had seven straight pars and ended her day with back-to-back birdies on the par-5 seventh and the par-3 eighth.

Overall, Shutler shot 78-76-71-225 to tie for 20th place. Her 54-hole total is the second best by a Hornet this season, trailing only her own 224 at the WSU Cougar Cup.

Freshman Lexie Hall had the second lowest round of the day for the team, shooting an even-par 72. Hall had birdies on the par-5 14th and the eighth to accompany 14 pars and two bogeys. She finished in 36th place after shooting 83-76-72-231.

Fellow freshman Sagee Palavivatana, who led the team after the first day, finished tied for 32nd with rounds of 77-73-80-230. On Wednesday, Palavivatana's round consisted of one birdie, nine pars, seven bogeys and a double bogey.

Samantha Stockton and Kercia Brakel each shot 82 to complete the lineup. Stockton placed 49th with a 54-hole total of 83-73-82-238. Brakel shot 79-83-82-244 to finish 57th.

Top-ranked UCLA cruised to the team title with a three-round total of 849. The Bruins were 20 shots better than Washington (869) and 34 shots ahead of third-place Stanford (883). The Hornets finished in eighth place with a three-round total of 920.

Lee Lopez of UCLA was the medalist. Lopez shot 68-71-70-209 and finished at 7-under par. Her total was four strokes ahead of teammate Stephanie Kono, Washington's Sadena Parks and San Jose State's Madeleine Ziegert, who tied for second.

The tournament was the final fall event for the Hornets. The team returns to competition on Feb. 19 at the Folino Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
