3/8/2011

FRESNO, Calif. — Julie Shutler's closing round of 78 led the Sacramento State's women's golf team in the final round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Tuesday at Copper River Golf Club.

Shutler began her day with an uncharacteristic quadruple bogey on the par-4 10th hole. She immediately responded with a pair of birdies and pars to leave her at 2-over through five holes. Shutler made the turn at 6-over after carding a par, two bogeys and a double bogey. From that point, Shutler played the rest of her round at even par. The Manteca, Calif., native had four birdies over her final nine holes to go along with two pars, two bogeys and a double bogey. Shutler's three round total of 81-80-78-239 placed her tied for 46th.

Ellese Dias and Kercia Brakel tied for 59th place after each totaled 244 in three rounds. Dias recorded her second consecutive round of 80 and finished at 84-80-80-244. On Tuesday, Dias posted four pars, four bogeys and a double bogey over her first nine holes. She closed with two birdies, four pars, two bogeys and a double bogey.

Brakel, who led the team after the first day, shot 80-80-84. In the third round, Brakel bogeyed her first first four holes but played the next five at 2-over. She played the front nine at 6-over with a birdie, two pars, five bogeys and a double-bogey.

Samantha Saffold and Kristen Watson each shot their best round of the tournament on Tuesday. Saffold finished at 83-85-80-248 to tie for 68th place. The senior began her day with three consecutive pars before a double bogey and bogey placed her at 3-over. Three more pars and a bogey gave her a 40 at the turn. Over her final nine holes, Saffold had a birdie on the par-5 third, three pars, and five bogeys.

Watson completed her first tournament with the Hornets by shooting 90-94-85-269 and finished 84th.

UC Davis repeated as the team champion. The Aggies totaled 893 as a team and were 17 strokes ahead of second-place Cal Poly. Sacramento State was 14th at 975.

The Hornets return to action on Monday, March 21, at the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
