CHEN SURGES IN FINAL ROUND OF WSU COUGAR CUP

PULLMAN, Wash. — Justine Chen led the Sacramento State women's golf team with a 4-over 76 in the third and final round of the WSU Cougar Cup on Wednesday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

As a team, the Hornets finished the three-day event in 10th place with a total of 961. Sacramento State shot rounds of 320, 320, and 321 to reach its total. Host Washington State maintained its team lead and held off rival Washington to win the tournament. The Cougars ended with a total of 917 while the Huskies used a tournament-best third round of 298 to finish one stroke back.

Individually, Washington's Karinn Dickinson and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro shared the medalist honor. Dickinson shot 75-74-71-225 while Mortellaro carded rounds of 80-70-70-220.

On Wednesday, Chen easily posted the best score on the team for the Hornets. The junior opened her day on the 10th hole and was 3-over through eight holes before birdying the par-5 18th. After two pars, she dropped to 1-over with a birdie on the par-4 third. Chen finished her round with three pars and three bogeys and finished the tournament tied for 22nd.

Senior Samantha Saffold also tied for 22nd overall. The Sacramento native led the team in the first two rounds but shot 84 on Wednesday. Saffold was 3-over at the midway point of her round with a birdie, five pars, two bogeys and a double-bogey. She played the front nine at 9-over with three pars, four bogeys, a double-bogey and triple-bogey.

Julie Shutler tied for 42nd overall at 82-80-81-243. The junior stumbled at the start of her round with double-bogeys on her first two holes. From that point, she played the next seven even with the help of a birdie on the par-4 15th. On her final nine holes, Shutler had four pars and five bogeys.

Kercia Brakel and Hayley Holloway each shot 82 to tie for the fourth-best mark on the team during the third round. Brakel finished tied for 48th overall with a 54-hole total of 246. On Wednesday, She shot 39 on her first nine holes and was just 6-over through 16 holes before ending her round with consecutive double-bogeys.

Holloway birdied the par-4 15th and the par-5 17th but also had two pars, four bogeys and a triple-bogey on her first nine holes. Her final nine was much more steady with four pars and five bogeys.

Sacramento State will next play at the Golfweek Conference Challenge beginning on Sunday in Vail, Colo.
